“It is not only prayer that gives God glory but work. Smiting on an anvil, sawing a beam, whitewashing a wall, driving horses, sweeping, scouring, everything gives God some glory if being in his grace you do it as your duty." - Gerard Manley Hopkins
"For goodness’ sake, don’t forget this invisible companion, ever present, ever disposed to listen to us...Keep him always before your mind’s eye. Remember this angel’s presence often, thank him, pray to him, always keep up a good relationship."- Padre Pio, on your guardian angel
“The light bears witness to itself; it opens the sound eyes and is its own witness, that it may be known as the light. But how about the unbelievers? Is it not present to them? It is present also to them, but they have not eyes of the heart with which to see it.” Augustine
"Why did the Lord Jesus Christ present this parable to us? ...When even a cheat is praised for his ingenuity, Christians who make no such provision blush...He was insuring himself for a life that was going to end. Would you not insure yourself for eternal life?" - Augustine
"This is my last hour of life, listen to me attentively: if I have held communication with foreigners, it has been for my religion and my God. It is for Him that I die. My immortal life is on the point of beginning." - St. Andrew Kim Taegon
St. Januarius - better known in NYC as San Gennaro - was a martyr who died around 305. The Cathedral of the Assumption in Naples has a reliquary of his blood which occasionally liquefies, something that scientists still cannot explain.
"She through her love brought into the open the tears that were hidden in the depth of her eyes, and the Lord because of her courage brought into the open the thoughts that were hidden in the Pharisee." - Ephrem the Syrian
St. Robert Bellarmine explained to Galileo that his heliocentric theory was correct but his proof was wrong - he taught the earth's orbit was circular. The inventor was not silenced for his research but for his exegesis - i.e. denying miracles in Josh 10 and 2 Kings 20.
Pope St. Cornelius fought heresies, promoted confession & preserved the Church in Rome, while St. Cyprian - a convert - became bishop of Carthage, defended councils, and promoted infant baptism. They both died as martyrs during Roman persecutions.
Today we recall the seven sorrows of Mary: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus for three days, meeting Jesus on His way to Calvary, the crucifixion and death of Jesus, the body of Jesus being taken from the cross, and the burial of Jesus.
In a Chapel in the Castle of St. Francis Xavier in Navarra, Spain hangs a 13th Century crucifix known as "the smiling Christ." It is not intended to minimize the sufferings of Jesus, it was created to emphasize the triumph of the cross.
"Doesn’t the tabernacle hold the most precious treasure ever to be found on earth or in heaven? Unfortunately, there are many who cannot see it because they are blind. Yet our faith unerringly tells us that endless riches are to be found there." - St. John Bosco
Fr. Francis Grogan, 76, of the Congregation of the Holy Cross was a WWII Navy veteran and held degrees from Notre Dame and Fordham. A kind, gentle soul, he boarded Flight 175 on 9/11 to visit his sister before beginning a new assignment. He remains a priest forever.
"Good days & bad days. Up days, down days. Sad days, happy days..Turn to Him each day. Put your faith and your trust and your hope and your life in His hands, and He’ll take care of you and you’ll have a good life."- NYFD Chaplain Fr. Michael Judge's homily on 9/10/2001
"Let them look at [St. Peter Claver] who for fully 40 years gave himself up to minister with the greatest constancy in his labors, to a most miserable assembly of slaves; truly he ought to be called the apostle of those whose constant servant he professed himself." Pope Leo XIII
