Demystifying broadcast tech & its unsung heroes. Documentary podcast for engineers & the curious. Independent. Opinions my own.fullymodulated.com WisconsinJoined April 2025
Early radio required 30-pound microphones that were fragile and could break easily. Hosts had to remain perfectly still, as even slight movements or vibrations from outside could disrupt broadcasts.

Behind-the-scenes look at what microphones NPR actually uses across their programming. Perfect for radio professionals and curious listeners.

The Electro-Voice RE20 microphone, favored by radio legends like Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh, has been the industry standard for over 50 years. Priced at $500, it's famous for that classic "radio voice" sound. Listen more: fullymodulated.com/2463382/episod…#radiohistory#podcasting
Howard Stern just pulled off one of his classic stunts, and the media fell for it all over again. In this bonus drop of Fully Modulated, I break down how he fooled fans, news outlets, and even the AP with one perfectly timed prank.

Had to make a new episode after you rightfully pointed out my mistake about HD Radio. It appears that the tech I once dubbed a failure is actually widely used—your car likely relies on it now. Tune in: buzzsprout.com/2463382/episod…#HDRadio#TechTalk
Your weekend traffic reports are sponsored by... HD Radio (most likely). The tech that seemed to flop is secretly enhancing your GPS accuracy! 😲 #WeekendTraffic#TechTrivia
Happy Friday! Big thanks to everyone who pointed out my mistakes in this week's HD Radio episode. Sometimes, it takes listeners to keep you accountable 📻. Plans for the weekend include tuning into my own show to catch any other errors I made 😅. #TGIF#PodcastLife
New episode is out… I need to make some corrections. I was rightfully called out on the last episode, and while I don’t take it back, there is benefits of the HD Radio platform.

What happens when broadcast engineers gather? They talk about keeping the infrastructure that connects communities actually running. New episode Monday on the Midwest Broadcasters Clinic.

From Oakland to the Twin Cities, police radios are going dark. What's striking: even law enforcement agencies rely on public scanner feeds to track incidents across jurisdictions. When everyone goes encrypted, who loses information?

Gary Burbank dies at 84. For 26 years on WLW, he created characters that made millions laugh across the Ohio Valley. What happens when local radio loses voices that connected entire regions?

Oakland PD is encrypting radio comms after 100+ years of public access. Should police radio traffic remain open to the communities being served?

The Howard Stern story is really about media fragmentation. A shock jock who once had 20M listeners now has 125K. His $500M contract expires amid family health struggles and political alienation of his base.
Platforms change faster than audiences can follow.
What’s disappointing: stations shutting down HD Radio because it “failed.” Even basic HD1 with metadata is genuinely useful. We’re abandoning working infrastructure because it didn’t meet inflated expectations.
What’s funny is broadcasters stumbled into building exactly what cars needed: a data layer for local info. They just thought they were making radio sound better. Sometimes the best product strategy is accidental.
Broadcasters spent billions trying to reinvent radio and failed. But HD Radio’s accidental win - smart car displays with traffic/metadata - shows innovation is iterative, not revolutionary.
