Give Us This Day started with a simple idea about human nature: we are never satisfied.
The name comes from the words “give us this day” in the Lord’s Prayer, but Give Us This Day is not a Christian band. The name was never chosen as a declaration of faith. It was chosen because of what those words can mean when you look at them from another angle.
Human beings have always wanted more.
You can give someone everything they need and eventually they’ll reach for something else. More money. More power. More knowledge. More recognition. More time. We spend our lives chasing the next thing, and when we finally get it, something else takes its place.
Give us this.
Give us that.
Give us more.
Give Us This Day.
That idea became the foundation of the band and eventually the foundation of our imagery as well.
Our sigil shows a human hand reaching upward toward a divided sphere. The two halves represent night and day. Together, they make one complete day and tie directly into the name.
But there’s another meaning hidden in it.
The sphere can also be interpreted as the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden.
Whether you believe that story literally or not isn’t really important. What matters to us is what it says about people. In the story, mankind is given paradise. Everything necessary is already there. There is only one thing that cannot be taken.
So naturally, that becomes the thing humanity reaches for.
That image has existed in one form or another throughout human history. We reach beyond what we have even when what we have should be enough. Sometimes that desire pushes us forward. Sometimes it destroys us. Most of the time, we don’t know which one it is until after we’ve already reached for it.
That is Give Us This Day.
The music follows a similar philosophy.
We come from heavy music, but we’ve never been particularly interested in arguing about exactly which corner of metal something belongs in. Deathcore is part of our foundation, but so are death metal, hardcore, metalcore, thrash, progressive metal, nu-metal and the countless other things we’ve listened to over the years.
If something belongs in a song, it belongs there.
The people behind Give Us This Day also didn't begin their musical lives with this band. Its members came together after years spent writing, recording, performing and being part of other projects. Those experiences came with successes, failures, friendships, disagreements and plenty of lessons learned the hard way.
Starting another band after all of that is a strange thing.
You know exactly how much work it takes.
And you do it anyway.
Give Us This Day was built with the idea that the music should come first and that we should be willing to build as much of the world surrounding it ourselves as we can. The songs, recordings, artwork, videos, live show and everything else are different pieces of the same thing.
There was never a plan to reinvent heavy music or claim that we're doing something nobody has ever done before.
We just wanted to make something that felt like ours.
Something heavy. Something uncomfortable when it needs to be. Something honest enough that we can still stand behind it years after we made it.
Because underneath the music, the imagery and the name is an idea that is much older than this band.
Human beings reach.
We always have.
We reach for things that make our lives better. We reach for things that ruin us. We reach because we're hungry, ambitious, afraid, curious, jealous, hopeful or simply because somebody told us we couldn't have something.
And even after our hands are full, we find something else to reach for.
That is the contradiction at the center of Give Us This Day.
The hand will always be reaching.
