I was in India for 6 days...after 9 years. The biggest improvement was in intercity highways....Delhi to Jaipur was exceptional...Agra to NOiDA great...notice I didn't say to Delhi... For a Verizon phone in India, cell phone service has improved a lot...airtell, their partner used to be horrible, not anymore. Rest of it was the same as 9 years ago. More economic activity...fuller hotels...and establishment...bigger malls without much observed sales... But city traffic the same... Delhi airport was supposed to be great...but didn't feel that way..except for the duty free shops . Immigration processing was materially better... That said, air traffic seems like orders of magnitude higher... Took a train from Jaipur to Agra...comfortable but not different from 9 years ago...buying the ticket was so so much easier however. For my travels, the biggest improvement was in finding car services online. Truly exceptional service. Reliable and inexpensive. Was surprised that the weather was this hot and humid in late September. Didn't remember it this way. Met friends from my boarding school after 50 years...exceptional. Overall a great trip. The biggest disappointment was the quality of tea at all the hotels. What the hell happened with that...even the basic tea that you got at your college mess was better than what you get at hyatt Regency in delhi...modiji..knowing chai...has to do something about that.

Data centers are booming. All other private construction is shrinking.

We talk a lot about GPUs but zoning, transformers, grid access and local approvals are becoming real constraints too. This Pennsylvania project is already offering ~$165M in community benefits. Apply that across the 1,420 U.S. data-center projects in the pipeline and you’re at ~$234B. Of course every project won’t look like this, some will cost more, some will stall and that delay has a cost too. The AI infrastructure bill just keeps getting new line items and we may still be early, feels like there’s going to be a lot more scope creep from here.

Found this interesting @Meta paper today on multimodal AI. Anecdotally, the finished apps from frontier labs already feel much better than the bare APIs. This reinforces that LLM is only one part of the product, the architecture around it matters just as much.

The AI race is slowly becoming an infrastructure race. Models still matter, but you need the power, cooling, transformers, racks, land and grid capacity to actually scale them. OpenAI’s former data center head moving to Nvidia feels like another signal that the bottleneck is moving out of the lab!!

$BABA UNVEILS NEW AI CHIP, PLANS 5T-10T PARAMETER MODELS AND 20GW+ OF DATA CENTER CAPACITY Alibaba unveiled its new Zhenwu V900 AI chip, designed for both model training and inference, with performance roughly 3x higher than its predecessor released just four months ago. The V900 is expected to enter mass production and commercial release in Q1 2027. Alibaba says clusters built around the chip can scale to as many as 500,000 accelerators for training and running frontier AI models. Alibaba is also targeting more than 20GW of global data center capacity by 2032 and plans to launch its new Yitian 720 and 730 CPUs for agentic AI workloads in 2027. Qwen4 is currently in training and expected soon, while future Qwen generations are expected to scale to roughly 5T-10T parameters, versus 2.4T for the current Qwen 3.8 Max. Alibaba has committed more than $53B over three years toward AI infrastructure and capabilities.

I think this misses the conglomerate model a bit. Tata has cash-generating businesses funding bigger bets, much like Amazon did before AWS became such a massive payoff. Not every bet has to work, a few just have to work really big. And I think the Tatas have managed sunk cost fallacy pretty well over time. If history has taught us one thing, never bet against the @TataCompanies 😊
