McClellan to Lincoln: “I have not and have not had any idea of postponing the advance until the old regiments are filled by drafted men”
McClellan to Lincoln: “I have the honor...to request that the order to fill up the old regiments with drafted men may at once be issued”
McClellan: “I see that there is much impatience throughout the country for a move—I am just as anxious...but am crippled by want of horses”
McClellan: “I have decided to move upon the line indicated by the Presdt...and have accordingly taken steps to execute the movement”
McClellan to Halleck: Does “the President desire me to march on the enemy at once or to await the reception of the new horses”
McClellan to Halleck: “Our cavalry even when well supplied with horses is much inferior in numbers to that of the enemy”
McClellan: “my army is not fit to advance—the old rgts are reduced to mere skeletons & are completely tired out—they need rest”
McClellan: "I incline think the real purpose of [the President's] visit is to push me into a premature advance into Virginia”
McClellan: “I had the opportunity…to describe to [the president] the operations of the army since the time it left Washington”
McClellan: “his Excellency the President honored the Army of the Potomac with a visit”
McClellan: “The work of reorganizing, drilling and supplying the army I began at the earliest moment”
McClellan: “You should see my soldiers now! You never saw anything like their enthusiasm—it surpasses everything you ever imagined”
McClellan: “I hope that my future will be determined this week…I now feel that my military reputation is safe”
McClellan: “Thank Heaven for one thing—my military reputation is cleared—I have shown that I can fight battles & win them!”
McClellan: “I have insisted that Stanton [and Halleck] shall be removed…The only safety for the country & for me is to get rid of...them”
McClellan: “history will…do me justice in deciding that it was not my fault that the campaign of the Peninsula was not successful”
McClellan to wife: “I feel some little pride…in having saved the North so completely”
McClellan to wife: “Our victory was complete & the disorganized rebel army has rapidly returned to Virginia”
McClellan to wife: “The battle of Wednesday was a terrible one. I presume the loss will prove not less than 10,000 on each side”
McClellan: “On the night of the 18th the enemy…abandon[ed] their position and retreat[ed] across the river”
