What Elon Musk just announced is revolutionary. To understand why, you have to go back to July. In July, Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, sat down with Musk. He told her what he's been saying for years: AI and robots will create an age of abundance. Not universal basic income. Universal high income. She asked the question every economist asks: "Where's the revenue coming from?" If you just issue checks, you get inflation. At the time, even Musk gave the old answer: the Treasury should issue checks. This morning, he gave a completely different one. One SpaceX share to every kid in America. The first of many. Not printed money. Ownership of the value itself. That's the real answer to her question. The revenue comes from where the value is created. And in the age of AI, where is value created? In private companies. Not in ministries, not in agencies, not in parliaments. The models, the robots, the chips, the energy, the rockets. Almost every productivity explosion of the next twenty years will happen inside companies that build. Once you understand that, the question of the century changes. It's no longer "will there be abundance?" It's "how do we share it?" There are only two models. In the first, the State sits in the middle. It taxes the companies that create value, then redistributes it. Every dollar passes through politicians, agencies, committees, lobbies. It arrives late, it arrives smaller, and it arrives captured. And it's inflationary by nature, because the State injects money without owning any of the production behind it. In the second, the entrepreneur distributes directly. Those who create the value hand ownership of it to citizens. No intermediary. Your income grows at the speed of the value being created. And deflation stops being your enemy: when AI drives the cost of everything toward zero, you're not holding a fixed check that politicians forgot to index. You own the machine that's driving prices down. We already know the State is a useless layer. Everything it touches becomes unaffordable: housing, tuition, healthcare. Everything it leaves alone gets cheaper and better every year. And in the age of superintelligence, that layer becomes even more absurd. Musk believes AI will exceed the intelligence of all humans combined within five years. In that world, what exactly is the function of a bureaucracy whose job is to take from one hand and give to the other, slowly, taking its cut along the way? The State was a slow layer in a slow world. In an exponential world, it's a bottleneck. QED: Elon Musk is disrupting the State. Not by fighting it. By making it unnecessary. It's the same playbook he's always run. He didn't lobby NASA to get better, he built SpaceX. He didn't beg carmakers to go electric, he built Tesla. He's not asking the State to redistribute better. He's building the alternative, and letting everyone compare. In 2008, everyone bet he'd go bankrupt. They bet rockets would never land. They bet electric cars would never sell. Now they're betting the State is irreplaceable. Don't bet against Elon.

Nous sommes à la conjonction des deux phénomènes civilisationnels distincts qui mènent à la révolution: Le premier : dans une société démocratique, comme le notait Tocqueville, toute inégalité devient vite insupportable car il n’y a plus que deux moyens d’expliquer que certains réussissent mieux que soi-même : la corruption du système ou le mérite. Et psychologiquement, sans surprise, on a plutôt tendance à penser que ceux qui réussissent mieux que nous bénéficient d’un système corrompu sont plutôt qu’ils soient plus méritants. La démocratie est donc un régime qui crée structurellement des armées de mécontents, sauf quand il y a une forte croissance économique. Car alors on peut prendre son mal en patience en se disant raisonnablement que dans quelques années, on sera soi-même au même niveau que ceux que l’on envie. Cela fait 15 ans qu’il n’y a plus de croissance en France. Les jeunes générations ne croient pas que leur situation rattrapera naturellement celle des plus privilégiés. En conséquence de quoi, elles n’ont plus grand intérêt à maintenir le système en vie. D’autant plus que n’ayant souvent pas d’enfants et n’étant pas propriétaires, elles ne sont soumise à aucunes des forces conservatrices traditionnelles. Le deuxième : comme le notait Schumpeter, le capitalisme faisant exploser la productivité industrielle et agricole, il réduit à la portion congrue le nombre de métiers manuels. La société se met donc à produire des cohortes gigantesques de personnes formées aux métiers intellectuels, alors même que l’économie n’a pas besoin d’autant de personnes dans ces secteurs. On a beau démultiplier les bullshit jobs, on produit néanmoins un grand nombre d’individus éduqués et inemployables. (Ils considérèrent que les emplois manuels ne sont pas assez dignes.) Ces cohortes sont structurellement révolutionnaires puisqu’elles se vivent comme un élite éclairée en opposition au système existant. La France est une des économies les plus tertiarisees du monde et avec un des plus hauts pourcentages d’individus faisant des études supérieures. Elle n’a plus de croissance depuis 15 ans. Kaboum, donc ? Pas encore, car il existe cependant une composante de la société qui a un intérêt absolu à maintenir le système tel quel : les retraités. Et ils représentent un tiers de l’électorat. Leur rôle est ambivalent : ils empêchent la révolution destructrice tout comme toute réforme à même de viabiliser le système. Voici donc une des tâches clé du politique aujourd’hui : relancer la croissance économique et rediriger les richesses vers les actifs en réussissant à la fois à contourner les blocages des retraités et à contenir les pulsions révolutionnaires de la jeunesse. Ce n’est qu’un des nombreux chantiers urgents de la France, en cette période de crises multiples. Mais avec la crise financière qui approche, c’est la fin de l’amortisseur de l’endettement. La question fondamentale d’au service de qui et de quoi est la machine économique française ne pourra plus longtemps rester sans réponse satisfaisante.

You've probably seen the video. A young Frenchwoman in Paris, in tears, begging looters to stop. "Why are you doing this? That's not what we stand for." Some accounts are mocking her. "She voted for it." I won't. Because what you see on her face is not stupidity. It's a disease that has infected the entire West, and it has a name: suicidal empathy. The term comes from Gad Saad, an evolutionary behavioral scientist at Concordia University in Montreal. A man who fled the Lebanese civil war as a child, and who knows what it looks like when a society falls apart. His new book, Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind, is the follow-up to The Parasitic Mind. Here is the thesis, and why it concerns every one of us. Empathy is one of the best things about us. It evolved for a reason: to care for our children, our kin, our tribe. It was calibrated for a world where the people you felt for were the people around you, and where empathy always came paired with its counterweight: the instinct to protect your own and to recognize a threat. Suicidal empathy is what happens when that mechanism misfires. When it fires at the wrong targets, in the wrong amounts, with no brake. When we feel more for the criminal than for his victim. More for the stranger who breaks the rules than for the citizen who follows them. More for how compassionate we look than for what our compassion actually produces. Where does it come from? Four layers. First, biology. Empathy is a spotlight, as the psychologist Paul Bloom put it. It lights up the one face in front of you and leaves everything else in the dark. The crying migrant on the boat is visible. The thousands of future victims of a broken system are statistics. A spotlight is a terrible tool for running a country. Second, our own civilization. The West is the civilization that put the victim at the center of its morality. Christianity taught us to care for the stranger, the poor, the weak. It was one of the greatest moral revolutions in history. But cut off from its other half, justice, responsibility, the duty to protect your own, it turns into something else. Third, ideology. In The Parasitic Mind, Saad described idea pathogens, ideas that hijack our reasoning. Suicidal empathy is the emotional counterpart: an ideology that hijacks our compassion. It sorts the world into oppressors and victims, then demands unlimited empathy for whoever ranks as the victim, whatever they do. Fourth, status. In the age of social media, empathy has become a display. Posting "refugees welcome" costs nothing and earns applause. The bill goes to someone else: the working class, the suburbs, the women walking home at night. The results are everywhere. Criminals treated as victims of society. Sexual assaults by migrants met with lenient sentences. Self-defense branded as aggression. Borders treated as cruelty. Saad's conclusion is simple: a society dies when it would rather display infinite tolerance than use its survival instinct. Now the part I'll add myself, and that few people dare to say. On average, women score higher than men on measures of empathy. It's one of the most consistent findings in psychology, across cultures, and it makes perfect evolutionary sense: for most of human history, the survival of children depended on it. It's a strength. But it means an ideology that weaponizes empathy will hit women harder. And the data shows it: in country after country, young women have moved sharply to the left of young men, especially on immigration. This is where men have a responsibility. Not to mock. Not to lecture. Not to say "she deserved it." Empathy has always needed a counterweight, and that counterweight was the protective instinct: the one that draws lines, says no, and stands between the threat and the people it loves. Men abandoned that role. They were told it was toxic, and many believed it. So they stayed silent at the dinner table, at work, with their partners, sisters, daughters and friends. That has to end. Men have to have this conversation, honestly and with respect: compassion that cannot say no is not compassion. It's surrender. And the first to pay for it are women. Many women already understand this better than anyone. Some of the bravest voices in this fight are women, precisely because they are the first to feel the danger in the street. A civilization rests on a balance: compassion and strength, openness and borders, mercy and justice. When one side swallows the other, the foundations crack. What we are watching in Europe is what happens when empathy has no counterweight left. Look at that young woman again. She isn't the enemy. She's what this ideology made of a generation that was told kindness would be enough. Our job is to make sure she's the last generation that has to learn it this way.
