30 years ago, Václav Havel became Czechoslovakia’s first non-Communist President in 41 years. The speed of change in those November 1989 days was staggering.

30 years ago, desire for freedom and dignity brought young people in Slovakia to the streets. This non-violent protests in Bratislava and Prague triggered the #VelvetRevolution. Today, it is our obligation to carry their message and be the guardians of freedom and democracy.

Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution began on this day 30 years ago, November 17, 1989, when police violently quelled a student protest in Prague. Six weeks later Václav Havel was elected president as over four decades of communist one-party rule finally came to an end. 🇨🇿✌️

On this day, 30 years ago, the #VelvetRevolution began. Students gathered in Prague and declared an indefinite strike asking for more democracy. Their unity inspired Europe and the world. This peaceful revolution changed the course of history forever.
