Create new habits: inclusive language requires breaking old habits. In order to change how you use language, we need to be conscious and deliberate in our choices so we don't fall back on previously used words and phrases.

If you hear someone using language that excludes others, say something. That's a way of changing culture, which changes slowly and often involves lots of small steps.

It can be very hard to confront noninclusive language, usually from influential people. However, confronting it can increase our confidence and when we confront someone about their language, they are less likely to do it again and change views on what is appropriate behavior.
Changing language reflects workplace culture, so by changing the way we talk about people, we can start dismantling these biases.

Imagine a world in which sexist language is replaced with racist language. Instead of saying ‘chairman’ or ‘you guys’, people would use ‘chairwhite’ or ‘you whiteys.’ If we cringe at the phrase ‘you whiteys,’ so should we work to change one of our most common phrases: “You guys.”
