Monday ranks as the largest negative reversal in S&P 500 futures since January 3, 2000. This is including times when they gapped up at least 0.5% at the open, traded to a new all-time high, then closed in negative territory.

The Dow Industrials enjoyed the best weekly gain in nearly a year. Even with Friday’s scare, it rallied nearly 3%, the most since last December.

More than half of the financial stocks in the S&P 500 have hit a 52-week high on both Wednesday and Thursday. That’s a high reading that has led to a short-term breather but long-term gains.

The S&P 500 has suffered only one close below its 20-day moving average since August. Many shorter-term traders use that average as a guide to trend, so in essence it has been fully in bull mode for three months.

Gold has settled into a tight range, without enough movement to trigger much in the way of emotional extremes. Hedgers are heavily short, which is a major negative.

Mixed bag in bonds. The broader bond market reached a couple of extremes this year (pessimism to start, optimism in August) but lately has been rangebound. Junk bonds, though, recently triggered an extreme by one of the worst 5-day bouts of breadth that market has seen in decade

Gold has been even more rangebound than the bond market, and has generated few emotional extremes. But agriculture has seen interest from “smart money” hedgers

Adding to the warnings. In addition to the Hindenburg and Titanic warning signs, an abnormally large number of stocks are in bear markets.

Overbought and oversold at the same time. More than 8% of stocks in the S&P 1500 index are overbought. Another 8% of them are oversold. That’s the most stocks in more than 10 years that are in both states.

The S&P’s split personality. Last week, there were a lot of buying climaxes (reversals from 52-week highs) in S&P 500 stocks - 32 of them, which was up from 20 the prior week.

Grain pessimism. The most-hated commodity this week is corn, where the Optimism Index dropped to 21 on Thursday. According to the Backtest Engine, there have been 143 days since 1990 when the Optix was below 22.

Yet again on Wednesday, the Dow Industrials, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite closed at record highs, while there were more declining than advancing securities on the NYSE and Nasdaq exchanges.
