It's not misleading. It's a measure of how many fairways you hit. Just as "Fairways & Semi" gives you another benchmark percentage. The "destructive drive frequency" is another indicator. Context and framework is all. In most things.

Nelly was -8 for 14 holes. Instead of expressing it in terms that nobody understands, let's say it how it is. 2 eagles, 4 birdies, 8 pars (including 5 under at the 4 x par 5's) = awesome golf

An 11-under new course record 61 usually gets the job done! It was as comfortable a round I've ever seen. Might've been a couple lower but it would've been unfair to be one shot higher.

Absolutely. I've invested 40,000 hours examining golf data to help already-talented golfers to improve and I totally agree. Even from fairways, one lie can be way better than another. Those who preach decision-making based on fractions of a shot are wrong.

On golfscoringskills.com we are starting to measure from perfect, average and below average lies from fairways, bunkers and rough. These are completely subjective of course but in practise, unlike play, there is no danger of diluting the data sample. 3/3

The data buckets/ shot categories aren't diverse enough. Driving into the rough may still leave an approach shot or it may need to be followed by a positional/ recovery. Strokes Gained fails to even recognise any of the 7 different shot types in golf... 2/3

The Strokes Gained concept - originally conceived in 1968 - works beautifully for putting but if coaching and understanding (the game better) are the primary objectives, the greatest weakness of SG is its failure to distinguish between different lies... 1/3

One of my pro clients yesterday was lamenting that despite hitting tons of greens this YTD, "I'm not hitting my wedges close enough". His data proved otherwise! FACTS > impressions, every time.
