I am pleased to join admirers around the world in celebrating the 90th birthday of Nigeria's iconic son and the world-renowned Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde, famously known as Wole Soyinka. Tomorrow, July 13th, will be the climax of the series of local and international activities held in his honour. To underscore the literary giant's global relevance, a symposium and poetry reading were held in Rabat, Morocco, on 9 July. The event was organised by the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA). Professor Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Literature Prize in 1986, deserves all the accolades as he marks the milestone of 90 years on earth. Having beaten prostate cancer, this milestone is a fitting testament to his ruggedness as a person and the significance of his work. It is also fitting we celebrate this national treasure while he is still with us. I am, accordingly, delighted to have the honour to announce the decision of the Federal Government to rename the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, as The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts. We do not only celebrate Soyinka's remarkable literary achievements but also his unwavering dedication to the values of human dignity and justice. ——— Our paths crossed during our just struggle for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. When faced with a trial in absentia and death sentence by the military regime at home, he galvanised opposition in exile through NALICON and NADECO. His global stature made him the face of our struggle to validate June 12 and restore democracy in Nigeria. Today, I join the world to celebrate his profound influence on generations of writers, scholars, and activists who have been inspired by his work. I celebrate him for giving us the spark to fight and confront military dictators in our country. I celebrate him for his enduring spirit and for teaching us that literature and drama can be used as a powerful tool to challenge the status quo. I wish Professor Soyinka an incredibly happy 90th birthday. May he continue in good health to find creative fulfilment in the next decade leading up to his centennial. May he continue to inspire us all to build a nation where people are free from oppression and our teeming youths can live up to their dreams without being a wasted generation.

(ICYMI) View from Abroad: Nigeria's economy not in a mess Former British Council Director in Abuja, David Roberts, said Nigeria's economy that posted a GDP growth of 3.46% in Quarter 4, cannot be said to be in a mess. In a statement, he wrote: “I lived and worked in Nigeria for many years as a British diplomat, and one of the issues that most disturbed me was the sustenance of the fuel subsidy regime. “Why would a country with a severe infrastructural deficit invest more money on a wasteful expenditure such as cheap petrol, instead of building schools, hospitals, dams and a national railway system? It is evident that it had to go. “We joined the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in saying as much to the Nigerian government. And at long last, it is gone. “And everything we said that would happen after it goes is happening. Nigeria’s GDP is growing at 3.46 per cent, while Europe is on the edge of recession. “Her stock market just crossed 100,000 basis points, overtaking Argentina’s as the world’s most profitable stock market. And capital importation is up by 66 per cent. “But that is not the best story. The cherry on the cake is that fuel importation into Nigeria is down 50 per cent. This means that Nigeria’s much-depleted federation account will rapidly be resuscitated. “More funds will trickle down to the federating states from the Federal Government, and if well utilised, Nigeria could attain her pre-2015 growth levels. “The future looks bright for Nigeria if her government can stay the course and resist the pressure to reverse the fuel subsidy removal and the flotation of the Naira. “Nigeria’s economy is not a mess. There is nothing messy about 3.46 per cent growth. If attaining such growth was easy, then we would have that level of GDP development in Europe. But we don’t.” “The only thing I would say is that Nigeria must improve its regulatory institutions, including measures to counter corruption.” “If I were an investor and observed that the former head of the Nigerian Communications Commission is now the Chairman of the board of MTN, and sitting with him on that board was the former head of Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service and the former Minister of Communication Technology, along with a host of former top regulatory quango bosses, I would have concerns. “If Nigeria can fix this, I do not see how the country will not benefit from a high influx of foreign capital. “Money is attracted to domiciles with good policies and sound regulations. “Right now, Nigeria has the policy. All it needs is to take steps to build confidence in its capacity to regulate and renew efforts to identify and stamp out corrupt practices.”

The only palliative I would recommend President Bola Tinubu gives to Nigerians is to ensure that every Nigerian child goes to school free of charge from nursery to secondary and receives free feeding in school. If a state cannot afford it, then the Federal Government must step in and support that state. If a child is found on the streets during school hours, whether as almajiri or hawker, arrest their parents and throw away the keys. Then, all pregnant women in Nigeria should receive at least a crate of eggs and a carton of milk, along with vitamins. And their delivery must be at state expense. Finally, everyone above 65 should receive a certificate for free public transportation at government expense, plus a monthly grant of at least one-third of the minimum wage, except if they are already receiving a pension from either a public or private corporation. Every other person, provided they are able bodied adults, should go and work, or farm, or do business. If they refuse to work, farm, or do business, let them DIE!!! Yes! DIE!!! Nigeria is not a rich country. Saudi Arabia has a population of 35 million and makes $350 billion annually from oil. That is $10,000 per citizen. Nigeria has a population of 220 million people and makes approximately $36 billion from crude annually. That is $150 per person. At 2.6 million people, Qatar has just one per cent of our population. Yet, their annual revenue is $68 billion. Two and a half times that of Nigeria.  Nigeria is not an oil-rich country. We are an oil-poor nation with 220 million entitled people who, encouraged by dishonest and irresponsible media like AriseTV, are shining their eyes on our so-called oil wealth and expecting manna from heaven. On a per capita basis, at their total crude capacity, Angola and Ghana are more oil-wealthy than us. There is only one way Nigeria can become rich. #GrowNairaBuyNaija Drive Innoson or Nord  Call with Glo  Build with Dangote and BUA Eat breakfast with Nasco  Lunch and dinner with made in Nigeria rice, even if it has stones Go on dates at Tantalisers and Suya spots Drink Zobo  Celebrate with palm wine Fly Air Peace over Air France, KLM, or Lufthansa  Shop at local markets  Eat cassava bread over foreign wheat bread  Watch Enyimba and Kano Pillars  See Nollywood movies at Silverbird Stream Nigerian music  Wear aso oke, agbada, babanriga, or isi agu
