Been MIA. Dog has been ill and required round the clock medication. He’s starting to recover well now and I’m so grateful, but now I’m bogged down in guilt over not getting any work done last week 😩 #phdchat

I’m sorry I’ve been quiet lately. But I had to come here because I just saw an awful thread on Facebook of tenured faculty arguing that grad students cannot take weekends off and we should be grateful for our opportunity. If you were wondering why I can’t wait to leave academia
Recently I’ve had far more days I want to quit then see this through. I’m in my fifth year but I’ve had so many technical troubles and I feel so far behind. Everything feels bleak at the moment

I advocated for myself! I brought a problem with a colleague to my PI and he was receptive, listened, and assured me he would help!! It’s so hard for me to have these conversations, I’ve been working on this in therapy, and I’m so glad I was well received. Feeling so relieved
@phd_meming @PhDVoice We do ask for help when we want to travel, etc, and everyone is very generous, but it feels like a big ask just because we want a day off at home so we rarely do that unless we are going away, but maybe we should!
How do you set boundaries when you HAVE to work every day? Not every day is long, but my cell culture system requires me to change media daily, so no such thing as a completely “off” day (though some days may only be an hour of work) #AcademicChatter #MentalHealth #PhDChat

Grateful that I meet with my therapist today. This past week I’ve had so many physical symptoms of anxiety and I can’t figure out why. Not managing my stress well and feeling like I’ll never graduate.

This past week wasn’t my most productive, but the nature of my experiments the week before meant I was working way too much. Trying to not feel guilty for taking a lighter week and making time for me. I’m more than a scientist. #AcademicMentalHealth #PhDChat #mentalhealth

Being clearly anxious when you can’t pinpoint what is causing the anxiety is the WORST. I feel like I haven’t slept in days but I have nothing to point at, well, besides *gestures*
Today everyone I knew had a snow day. We were still expected to come in and work despite a pandemic and treacherous road conditions. I took a snow day for my mental health and my physical safety. The science can wait #MentalHealth #AcademicMentalHealth
