I took my puppy to LA State Historic Park—it's a fantastic park, and the little guy had a great time.

How could I possibly miss a friend's birthday? After all, such joyful moments are rare throughout the year.

On this day in 1890, Congress created Yosemite National Park which is just one park in what became a much larger system. On October 1, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed an act setting aside more than 1,500 square miles of California’s Sierra Nevada, about the size of Rhode Island, as Yosemite National Park. It was the nation’s third national park, after Yellowstone (1872) and Sequoia (established a week earlier). Today Yosemite is one of 63 national parks, and one unit among more than 400 places managed by the National Park Service. The valley already had a different kind of protection. In 1864, Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant, giving Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias to California as a public trust. It was the first time the federal government set land aside specifically for public enjoyment and preservation. That grant did not cover the high country around the valley. In 1889, John Muir took Century Magazine editor Robert Underwood Johnson into Tuolumne Meadows and showed him meadows damaged by heavy sheep grazing, what Muir called “hoofed locusts.” Their writing and lobbying produced the 1890 law, which ringed the still state-run valley with a federal park. In 1906, California returned the valley and the Mariposa Grove to federal control, so the landscape was managed as one park. Yosemite is famous for Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and the sequoia groves, and it remains among the most visited parks in the country. The same idea…public land held for scenery, watersheds, and recreation…later covered places as different as Acadia, the Grand Canyon, Everglades, and Gates of the Arctic. Yosemite was an early chapter, not the whole story. I hope that I will get to go there one day!

@residentreformr Religion is something deeply sacred. Do you think faith is something that should mainly remain within the heart, or should it also be expressed outwardly through the way we live and treat others?

Although my busiest moments each day are not very long, I truly value the experiences, lessons, and growth I gain from my work. And just like that, another workday comes to an end.
