Behind every seafood meal are the people who harvest it, the science that helps sustain it, and the habitats that make it all possible.

What does El Niño mean for U.S. fisheries and marine life? What can fishermen and coastal communities expect?
This phenomenon can have intense atmospheric and oceanographic effects, such as increased precipitation, flooding, and warmer ocean temperatures. fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/…
Your dissolved-oxygen probe can drift long before it fails. Four habits that keep the number honest:
1. Spot-check it every week against a freshly calibrated handheld meter, same spot, same depth.
2. Clean the membrane or sensing cap on a schedule. In warm water, fouling can build up in days.
3. Double-check the salinity and barometric pressure settings. A wrong salinity value skews the mg/L reading even when the sensor itself is fine.
4. Log the offsets. A probe that keeps reading a little low is telling you something.
A wrong DO number at 4 a.m. is worse than no number.
What happened across the #Ocean in #September?
🔹 Average global sea surface temperatures hit 21.09 ± 0.08°C
🔹 #MediterraneanSea saw the warmest September since 1993, averaging 27.34 ± 0.17°C
🔹 North #Atlantic experienced its second-warmest September, reaching 25.29 ± 0.06°C average SST
🔹 #MarineHeatwaves persisted across the globe, majorly affecting the Western #Pacific, Equatorial Pacific, Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean Sea

@IAFmagazine ASC support lands best on farms that already keep continuous DO and salinity trails. Spot samples at audit time rarely catch the overnight dips that drive most non-conformances.
@InvestAfrica@WeskusDM@InvestSA_@the_dtic Land-based projects sell cleaner to investors when a DO, temperature and salinity baseline is logged before first stocking, not after the tanks fill. That trail is part of the diligence pack.
@CookeScotland Deep ocean pens reward crews who learn to read oxygen and current at pen depth, not only surface weather. Building that into apprenticeship training pays off on every night shift.
@Guangming_Daily Beautiful scene at Cheni. Even ecological ponds benefit from a quick morning clarity and DO check; warm calm nights can leave algae stress under a still surface.
@CoF_Gujarat A 50% upgrade subsidy helps most when the new gear comes with a simple daily DO and salinity log. Intensity rises fast; water checks should keep pace.
@OfficialSEZMC Weekly reviews like this move parks faster when water-quality and aeration specs are locked before ponds fill. Retrofitting sensors later usually costs more than planning them into the civil works.
@belizemedia For coastal fish and shrimp farms, record warm water is a cue to plan ahead: harvesting market-size stock early lowers the biomass at risk if oxygen gets tight.
@DavidHuyben Feed only pays off once it is eaten. Logging uneaten pellets after each meal shows the real conversion on the farm, not just what the formula promises on paper.
@Scripps_Ocean Useful on the farm side too: GPS heights are measured against an ellipsoid, and a geoid model is what turns them into height above sea level when setting pond dikes or tide sensors.
@CookeScotland Great to see this in all weathers. Welfare checks get more useful when vet notes are logged next to temperature and oxygen, so a behaviour change can be traced to what the water did first.
@FishSens Going deeper trades wave stress for visibility. Once a pen sits below the surface, crews can't eyeball feeding or net condition, so cameras and sensors become the daily check.
@CIARIPortblair@PIBIndia@AgriGoI@icarindia@PIB_India@PIBDARE Impressive 30 kg per tank on island land. At that density, track settleable solids each morning; when the Imhoff cone climbs, cut the next feed pulse before water clarity crashes.
@INNOAQUAproject Nice loop. RAS effluent nutrients swing with feeding schedules, so logging nitrate on each batch you feed the Chlorella keeps algal growth steadier and shows how much load you are removing.
@BigelowLab Happy World Algae Day! A tip from the farm side: log current speed at each seaweed site. Lines in steady flowing water tend to take up nutrients better, which helps when choosing where to expand.
@ZFuzhou7686 With 500 deep cages, oxygen and temperature at depth often diverge from surface readings—spot-checking mid-cage DO after a calm night catches stress before harvest losses show up. Impressive scale at Fuqing.
