Yorkshire does this big and best thing! A similar find at Wadsley in 1873 when workmen found a fossil forest digging to build an asylum. The fossils were saved by Henry Clifton Sorby + he used the stump asymmetry to suggest palaeowind direction from W in Carb. times - a first!

#FossilFriday: the carapace of Venipagurus mariae, a hermit crab from the Lower #Lias at Black Ven, Lyme Regis, described and named by the late Joe Collins in 2011, genus name derived from Black Ven and species name honouring #MaryAnning. Holotype and paratype @NHM_London.

We stumbled across this great footage from @AP News archive recently. It features our 'Dinosaurs' on the move as well as aerial views of the Crystal Palace, footage of it on fire & the aftermath as it's demolished. Any ideas why the Dinos were being moved? buff.ly/4dbclev

Lyell's coloured map of #Kirriemuir & #Angus had been neatly folded - so much so that when opened, it was buckled, making parts hard to see. It was gently relaxed, with a little TLC and now is rolled for storage. @ARAScot #SomethingBig #Archive30
Thanks to the success of a major fundraising campaign, @morethanadodo recently celebrated the acquisition of an important archive related to William Buckland, the pioneering geologist who wrote the first scientific description of a dinosaur 200 years ago. Read more ⬇️
Though more likely drawing in ink and pencil, Lyell does like a splash of colour in his geological sketches 🎨 and it’s tempting to think, perhaps, someone else carefully picked out the details in watercolour…. #ColourfulArchives #Archive30

Cambridge geologist #AdamSedgwick was born OTD in 1785 in Yorkshire. In Lyme Regis on 20 Sept 1820 he noted in his journal 'After breakfast purchase fossils of Miss Anning', suggesting that by then #MaryAnning had taken over running the family fossil shop from her mother.

March 21, 1795, Giovanni Arduino, Italian naturalist died #OTD. Based on his research in the #Dolomites he proposed to subdivide #Earth’s crust in 4 rock layers sketching this section, eventually leading to our modern chronostratigraphic charts 📊 tinyurl.com/2sjffm24
In 1826 Mary Anning discovered a fossil belemnite (squid relative) with dried fossilised ink contained inside. Her friend Elizabeth Philpot revived the ink and used it to illustrate her own ichthyosaur fossil, which was thought to be the same age as the belemnite (200 mya).
March 13, 1920, died #OTD, British geologist Charles Lapworth, here seen with #geology students on a field trip in 1896 ⚒ Studying the stratigraphy & fossils of the UK, he identified the Cambro-Silurian boundary introducing the Ordovician birmingham.ac.uk/facilities/lap…
#InternationalWomensDay Elizabeth Philpot, Mary Anning’s childhood friend and an acclaimed fossil hunter in own right. Thought to be the first to discover the possible use of fossilized squid ink sacs for illustration. She used the fossilized ink to illustrate local fossil finds
#InternationalWomensDay Mary Morland (later Buckland) was a contemporary of Mary Anning. A skilled palaeontologist, educator and artist, she illustrated the first dinosaur described, Megalosaurus, along with fossils and events of Lyme Regis (including the Great Bindon Landslip)
