The way that Bud Light and Target are reacting to the far right angry at including LGBTQ+ people is EXACTLY why many of us have railed against corporate pride.
If your advocacy consists merely of rainbows that disappear at the first gust of fascist wind, it amounts to net harm.
It was so amazing seeing students getting their grown ups to join in their classroom drumming circle during student-led conferences today. The look of pure joy on ALL faces was truly heart-warming!
It's amazing what a little validation from a colleague can do for my self-esteem in the classroom when I find myself questioning everything I do and if I should even be a teacher. Peer-to-peer feedback is so important!
What I love the most about parent-teacher conferences is hearing how students have taken their learning home and have perhaps even taught their grown-ups a thing or two 🥰
Reminder from a HoH person:
Folks who are d/Deaf or HoH do NOT need you to yell. In fact, it often makes you *harder* to understand. Comically over-enunciating is also bad!
If you are trying to speak with a d/Deaf or HoH person you don't know well, try some of these:
Queer parents in the international school community, I need your help / advice / support / hope. Our first born (5) is at school and I’m feeling all kinds of guilt about her being the only one with two mums. If anyone is willing to share stories, please DM me. Thank you!
#DEIJ question: Who are we centring when we say we don’t want to disenfranchise folks from doing the work? Because going slow and not going at all has already disenfranchised the entire global majority and many marginalised folks… it’s built into white supremacy culture.
It's honestly been a bit of a rough start to the school year for me, but today I was gendered correctly while being introduced to the new kindergarten class and it not only made my day but gave me the sense of belonging I desperately needed!
And another school year starts... meeting some of the new and returning kids today reminded me why I love this job despite all the challenges it brings.
“A good friend once said, “If you break your arm, people rush to bring you flowers, food, and sympathy, but if your mind breaks even just a little, people run away, frightened and dismayed.” ― Nancy Thayer, An Act of Love
And now for another new and interesting life experience... going on strike.
I mean, I'd much prefer it if a strike wasn't necessary and teachers in Finland could be paid appropriately and have their needs met fairly.
Not many people know that I'm also a writer - but now you do! ;)
If you'd like to join me for writerly musings and all things bookish, please feel free to follow me @Xan_Writer :)
I try to keep this twitter more education and all things teacherly focused.
