Here’s a steel market update for the week of February 24, 2025, based on current trends and insights: This week, the steel market is showing signs of stabilization with some regional variations. In the U.S., steel prices have experienced a modest uptick, driven by ongoing supply constraints and renewed optimism following recent policy announcements. Domestic hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices are trending around $900-$950 per short ton, reflecting a slight increase from last week, as mills capitalize on rising scrap costs and steady demand from construction and manufacturing sectors. Lead times for sheet and plate products are also stretching, now averaging 6-8 weeks, a signal of tightening availability. Globally, the picture is mixed. In China, steel prices have edged up slightly, supported by a post-holiday pickup in market activity and growing confidence in infrastructure spending. However, elevated export volumes continue to pressure prices elsewhere, particularly in the EU, where demand remains subdued amid weak construction and automotive sectors. European apparent steel consumption is still lagging, with forecasts pointing to a modest recovery later in the year. Trade policies are adding another layer of complexity. The reimposition of 25% tariffs on steel imports from Canada and Mexico by the U.S., alongside a 10% tariff on Chinese steel, is shifting trade flows and prompting buyers to lean more on domestic sources. This could bolster U.S. steel prices in the near term, though some manufacturers report a sharp drop-off in orders due to uncertainty. Meanwhile, in India, steel demand growth is slowing, with domestic prices under strain from cheaper imports from China, Korea, and Vietnam. On the raw materials front, scrap prices are climbing—up roughly $40-50 per gross ton since early February—fueling expectations of further steel price hikes in the coming weeks. Iron ore, however, is softening slightly, with futures dipping as tariffs on Chinese steel dampen demand projections. Overall, the steel market this week reflects cautious optimism in the U.S., tempered growth in Asia, and persistent challenges in Europe.
