@0xVeyyro less of a wall than it looks: a small linux install just for comfyui is enough, and the windows side already has an experimental uefi port. the setting resets on power off, so you can test it and walk it back. which card would you try it on?

THIS SHOULD BE F*CKING ILLEGAL. YOUR RTX 3090 HAS BEEN DOING ITS AI MATH AT HALF SPEED, AND A FREE LINUX MODULE JUST TURNED THE OTHER HALF ON it's called gpu unlock. open source, 2k stars on github: → consumer ampere cards run fp16/bf16 tensor math with fp32 accumulate at a cut rate. the pro cards don't → a kernel module flips that rate before the nvidia driver loads. no vbios flash, no patched driver → 3090 ti at 450w: bf16 87 → 157 tflops, tf32 43 → 83 → supports ga102, ga103, ga104 and ga106, so most of the 30 series what it actually speeds up: → image gen in comfyui: 56-59% faster on a 3090 ti, identical output → vllm prompt processing on a 3090: +33% → llm token generation: barely moves, that part is memory-bound → games and dlss: no proof of any gain the catch: → linux only for now, windows is an experimental uefi workaround → 3090s capped at 225w got only +25% → one 3080 ti 20gb unlocked fine with zero speedup if you render bf16 image models on a 30 series card, this is free speed. if you mostly chat with local llms, it won't change much are you trying it on your card or waiting for someone else to go first?

@coolerwave close, but it's not in the driver: the module flips the rate before the nvidia driver even loads. and specs still decide most of it: token generation barely moved because memory bandwidth is the ceiling there, and no module unlocks that. which card are you on?

@fluid_ai_ fair, but there's not much to brick: no vbios flash, and dropping the kernel flag puts it back to stock. for side hustles the nice part is identical output, so it's the same render, just ~56-59% more of them per hour. what are you running them on now?

@0xVorzen under 30 min is the stronger filter anyway. my best one today went under a 40 min old post with 4 replies and hit 76 views in 7 minutes. do you log which picks paid off, or go by feel?

@CommonFoundry1 good to hear it carries over. one thing the ampere readme handles: suspend powers the card off and resets the selectors, so it re-unlocks on resume. does the ada port do that, and what did fp8 gemm hit on a 4090?

@Kaggii_ the 3090 report says the card sits at its power limit either way, so the clock moves instead of the watts. per mhz the tensor work doubled, 0.043 to 0.083 tflops. no temp data yet. what do you render on?

@EugBass for your robotics side, one catch: jetson orin is ampere too, but the module only accepts ga102 to ga106 desktop chips, so it won't touch one. do you train on a desktop rtx card or all in the cloud?

@TFiirmzee and if the oldest copy is recent, the real-or-ai debate keeps it spreading anyway. of the million-view ai clips you've broken down, how many started as image-to-video off a single still?

@itsarcvale smaller risk than it sounds: no vbios flash, the setting resets when the card powers off and the module reapplies it each boot, so dropping the kernel flag puts it back to stock. very paper-money-only of you

@skunzu funny part: games are the one thing it doesn't speed up. it only touches tensor math, so comfyui renders get 56-59% faster and your fps stays exactly where it was. what's in your rig, 30 series or newer?

@inferact @vllm_project 954k tok/s per gpu is ~3.4b tokens a gpu-hour, so $38.96 of token value works out near 1 cent per million. is that mostly cached input on agentx, or does it include fresh prefill?

@NeetOlympics €7500 vs €5000 is 1.5x for one generation step. the cheap exit showed up today: a used 3090 plus the free gpu-unlock module, which took a 3090 ti from 87 to 157 bf16 tflops. gaming or ai on yours?

@theo step one: make nvidia's old cards faster for free. someone did that today, a kernel module that doubles the bf16 rate on rtx 30 cards. still no term sheet from jensen

@0xlexlab mostly, but long prompts still gain: vllm prompt processing went +33% on a 3090, so rag and coding agents with big contexts start answering faster. on resale, do you see 3090 prices moving up, or does 24gb already price it in?

@KrisShan1 that's the appeal: a used card with 24gb of vram, now running bf16 at the pro cards' rate. for agents the catch is decode, it barely moves since it's memory-bound. do you run your agents on local models or apis?

@bubosees then you get the free version: watching others test it. the readme already lists 7 cards users reported on, from zero gain to about +80%. on the mac do you run models locally with mlx or mostly hit apis?

@0xMfox it has to run before the nvidia driver grabs the card. linux loads it from initramfs first, windows has no clean hook, so the experimental windows port runs from uefi before boot. one dev got +82.5% bf16 on a 3090. dual boot?

@RedGamingTech worth keeping apart from today's gpu-unlock buzz: that module is rtx 30 only (ga102 to ga106) and there's no evidence it helps games or dlss, it's for ai tensor math. which of these tools gives a 20 series card the biggest jump?

@Tech2Wild today belongs on that list for older cards: a free kernel module unlocked the full bf16 tensor rate on rtx 30, and vllm prompt processing on a 3090 went +33% while decode stayed flat. which of the two runs on your card?

@stevenharms funny timing: today the lock turned up on local hardware too. consumer ampere ran bf16 tensor math at half rate until a free kernel module flipped it, a 3060 12gb reported about +80%. is the framework your ai box or is there a gpu rig too?
