Do a physiological sigh: two short inhales through the nose, then one long exhale through the mouth. About 30 seconds. Sit or stand still. Inhale once through your nose until your lungs feel fairly full, then sneak in a second, smaller sniff to top them off. Exhale slowly through your mouth until your lungs feel empty. Do that once or twice. It works because the double inhale pops open tiny air sacs in the lungs that tend to collapse when you are stressed or breathing shallowly. The long exhale then offloads more carbon dioxide than a normal breath and stretches the vagus nerve pathway that slows heart rate. Lab work on this pattern shows it can drop arousal faster than box breathing or simple mindfulness in the moment, which is why it often feels like a pressure release rather than a technique you have to “believe in.”
