Still on Boston Legal

You'll burst up when they start singing. Hospitals need more nurses like her.

Federal agents reportedly collected DNA from Ilhan Omar and her family by searching through their trash before the raid on her D.C. home. Sources told NewsNation say potential upcoming indictments could be “stunning in nature.”

Dude. Elon Musk is on another planet.

MAJOR NEWS!!! @SECWAR REVEALS FORT HOOD SHOOTER’S FIRING SQUAD EXECUTION WILL BE PUBLIC Sec. Pete Hegseth says Nidal Hasan will be executed by soldiers at Fort Hood on December 3 at 1 PM—the same time as the 2009 attack. “We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public.” @JackPosobiec

Cabinet departments aren’t born by press conference alone. On Aug. 4, 1977, Congress passed — and the President signed — the Department of Energy Organization Act (Pub. L. 95-91). The Senate confirmed a Secretary. Then an executive order set the opening day. On this day in 1977, DOE activated. Scattered energy programs consolidated under one Cabinet department. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission stayed independent. Statutes create the box. Dates turn it on. 49 years today. Should big national missions get a new Cabinet department by statute — or stay split across existing agencies?

On this day in 1890, Congress didn’t just “save a pretty place” — it reserved a federal park around Yosemite. The Valley itself was already California’s. Lincoln’s 1864 Yosemite Grant had put Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove in the state’s hands as a public trust. Yellowstone became the first federal national park in 1872. Then, on Oct. 1, 1890, President Harrison signed the Act that set aside the surrounding high country as a federal reservation — while the Valley stayed with California. In 1905 California receded the Valley and Grove; on June 11, 1906 Congress accepted them into the federal park. Parks aren’t “found.” Statutes decide who owns the land and who runs it. Should protecting iconic public land start as a state trust, a federal park from day one — or both, in sequence, like Yosemite?

6/ Should every American community that pays federal taxes have a voting Member in the House — or is Delegate status the right trade for not being a state?

5/ Hernández served from Sept. 30, 1822, to March 3, 1823 — less than a year. The first Hispanic American to serve as a full voting Representative came later (Romualdo Pacheco, 1877). 204 years later, the Delegate trade-off is still the design.

1/ On this day in 1822, Joseph Marion Hernández of the Florida Territory became the first Hispanic American to serve in Congress. He was not a voting Representative. He was a Delegate — a House office that still exists.

Most people think “local taxes fund local schools. Period.” But when the federal government owns a base, park, lab, or other property, that land usually comes off the local tax rolls — while kids tied to that federal presence still need classrooms. On this day in 1950, President Truman signed Public Law 81-874 — Impact Aid — so federal dollars help those districts fill the hole. Today districts apply each year and the Education Department pays them directly. About 1,000+ federally impacted districts. Roughly 637,000 federally connected students. 76 years today. If federal land takes property off the local tax rolls, who should help pay for the kids who still need a classroom — and how would you design that check?

On this day in 1962, federal courts had ordered James Meredith admitted to Ole Miss — and Mississippi officials were still blocking him. This started as a private lawsuit. When the courts said the United States must enforce their order, the executive used a civil enforcement ladder: Marshals first, then a federalized National Guard, then the Army after a deadly riot. Meredith registered the next morning. Disagreeing with a court order is not the same as a right to defy it. When a federal court orders something a state refuses to do, who should enforce it — and how far should that ladder go?

3/ Why this matters at the kitchen table: federal workers, VA clinics, airports, parks, school grants, and disaster-aid pipelines don’t flip off just because the books roll to a new year. A stopgap law already covers them past Oct. 1. The date to watch under current law is Dec. 11—not Sept. 30 or Oct. 1. Did you know the federal “new year” starts Oct. 1—and that a continuing resolution can push the real funding deadline weeks or months past that date?

2/ The federal budget year runs Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. Oct. 1 opens FY2027. Congress already passed a continuing resolution—a temporary bridge that keeps agencies open at last year’s rates. H.R. 6500 / P.L. 119-103, signed Sept. 2, funds continuing operations from Oct. 1 through Dec. 11, 2026 (~72 days).

1/Tomorrow is the last day of the federal fiscal year. That does not mean a shutdown cliff at midnight. Ending the accounting year and running out of money are two different clocks.

When U.S. troops enter hostilities, the War Powers Resolution puts a visible clock on the deployment: report in 48 hours, then 60 days to get Congress’s go-ahead—or end the mission (with up to +30 days to withdraw safely). Late Sept. 1983: Congress completed its first specific War Powers authorization—for Marines in Lebanon’s Multinational Force, for 18 months. The President signed the policy and still disputed the clock. Should Congress have a hard clock on troop deployments abroad—or should the Commander in Chief decide how long U.S. forces stay?

3/ Why this still matters: an army doesn’t stay legal just because the soldiers are already present. Congress has to authorize it by statute, and the force sits under the Constitution and civilian command. If troops already existed under the Confederation, why did the First Congress still need a statute to put them under the Constitution?

2/ Troops were already there—about 700 noncommissioned officers and privates from a 1787 establishment. Continuity alone wasn’t enough. The statute (1 Stat. 95) put them under the new government by law. Soldiers swore two oaths: support the Constitution, and obey the President’s orders. The act itself sunsets at the end of the next session of Congress—Congress keeps the leash.

1/ On this day in 1789, the First Congress’s last-day act didn’t invent a brand-new army from scratch. It recognized and adapted the old Confederation troops under the Constitution.
