"For the farmer-writer a combination of droughts and dubious editors could very easily add up to starvation."
"I hate to stay in a school room all day, hate it to such an extent that I get nervous and snappy like a big dog confined in a narrow cage."
“I farm to eat. I can wait on book publications. There at least I have been luckier than any young writer has the right to hope.”
"Spring is a hard season but I like it most of the four."
"I hate very few people, and love less, but the majority of them are no more to me than so many trees..."
"I'll wager I have read the work of more poets than any other person in the south; this is not egotism, it is true..."
I'm becoming entirely too involved in extra-curricular activity for my physical good.
“I plant, and what I plant grows. God and I do pretty well with growing things.”
“I farm to eat. I can wait on book publication.”
I don’t know what it is I have lost to time but my bones remember it in the fall.
“I always have a desire to shock the young into a proper sense of reality.”
A farm is the most despotic thing in the world in certain seasons of the year.
"Robert Penn Warren is a sort of undecided classicist, and a better prose writer than poet."
I am an honest creature and my honesty frequently leaves me open for blows the devious never receive.
“I farm to eat. I can wait on book publications. There at least I have been luckier than any young writer has the right to hope.”
Among my Christmas acquisitions is an album of Ruben Stein playing Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2 in C minor.
A writer has his intuition or he has nothing at all, but a purely demonic poet is about as useful as any other mad man.
