@jjhall_77 @awscloud Class imbalance is very large; even after sampling at different rates. We currently predict a binary outcome (0 or 1+ events) using R's GBM package (adaboost loss). Then take that score and use it in a GLM model which predicts counts.

@wsisaac (cc @ProfFerguson ) HunchLab didn't participate, but our data scientist did participate personally. Note that the NIJ contest did not include drug "crimes" -- the entire contest was based on public calls for service (911 calls). Data types matter immensely.

@jjhall_77 Even with sampling we have been known to train models on @awscloud instances with quite a lot of RAM :)

@jjhall_77 Shortcuts meaning? We use 3 years of training examples with sampling strategies to handle data volume. We tend to see deployment zones that last from 1 week to many months when they are being created manually.

@jjhall_77 We do think that generating non-enforcement metrics (patrol time in missions, etc.) is a big factor at play. Also the fact that we are changing the patrol patterns each and every shift instead of a much more static deployment as is common with traditional hotspot maps.

@jjhall_77 Correct, John. We don't use inputs that would be influenced by the patrol deployments and therefore would generate a feedback loop.
