My new favorite software development metaphor: "Let's get the house in order before building new rooms." Excelling in building clean, resilient software requires continuous commitment to leaving things better than you found them. A lot of times that means cleaning up the area you're working in, before you even kick off any new work. It may seem tedious, it definitely isn't always fun, but it's undeniably valuable. Just because corners were cut with prior development doesn't mean you can't pursue better standards. Putting in the extra effort to lay the groundwork for higher code quality will always payoff.
