15 years ago, I made my first Opening Day start for the Toronto Blue Jays at the ripe age of 21 years old. I will never forget the energy of 50k Blue Jays fans absolutely rocking the Roger Center as I rounded the bases on my first home run of the season. For the month of April I was on fire. My mind started to race at the idea of replicating that production 5 more times on the way to a Rookie of the Year award. I felt like I had officially arrived. We talk a lot about dealing with failure, and not enough about dealing with success. In my case, I didn’t make it out of May before getting that dreaded call into the managers office and a ticket to AAA. Sure the league made some adjustments, and I was battling through a back injury. But above all else, my ego had taken the wheel. It was running wild with all the what if’s. The projections. The hype. 10 years, $100 million. Couple All Star games. Fame. When I eventually struggled, it was like the world flipped upside down. I had invested so much energy into the outside noise, I lost control of my process. And with that, my confidence. Words like potential are a funny concept. We focus a lot of time on grinding out technical and tactical training, but overlook the real user’s manual. Failure is a very important learning experience, but so is success. Success can be a very triggering experience, and lead humans down a path many never envision themselves going down. Wishing all the boys out there on the field a healthy and happy 2024 season. Nobody remembers who won the first mile of a marathon. Chop wood, carry water, and enjoy the ride.

He just needs regular playing time. If he can replicate his 2019 stat line over a full season at 2B and hit 10-15 home runs that’ll be awesome.

Not only is Anthony Bass having to hawk pitching lessons (throw straight and bad!) because no one will sign him, he's also seemingly only offering his services to boys, which I find hilarious.

It’s been seven and a half years since I was suspended, and my career essentially came to an end. The times I’ve spoken out about it on social media have been few and far between, unless there was information that I felt people needed to know. In any articles, podcasts, radio interviews, etc. that I have done, I’ve continued to stand by my story, and that I could never, would never, and have never compromised the integrity of the game of baseball. In that time, not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about it, or tried to find the answers as to how and why this happened. The evidence has continued to pile in our favor, as countless events that have continued to call into question the very thing, that myself and the other 20 or so players in baseball, and the countless other athletes in other sports were sanctioned for. Anything from test results that showed athletes testing positive on and off, for upwards of 8-10 years, for a metabolite which was originally deemed to have a 40-50 day excretion period, to the UFC (and other sports as well) implementing a threshold for the particular metabolite that we were all sanctioned for, in order to allow athletes who were mysteriously testing positive for these microscopic quantities of a single metabolite to continue to partake in their sports without being dragged through the mud. These are some of the things that have been accomplished over that time. I’ve received so many social media messages accusing me of being a liar and a cheater (among about a million other things) by people that don’t know me, or take time to actually learn my story. I’ve watched other athletes in baseball and other sports go through the same things that I did. I’ve listened to them cry into the phone the same way I did. I’ve listened to them tell me they couldn’t eat or sleep for weeks at a time. I’ve felt the same pain they have. That feeling of being on a deserted island by themselves, where nobody would listen to them, or believe them. The only thing I ever wanted to be when I was little, was a baseball player. I admired the game and like many others, I romanticized it. Baseball became my everything. It was my escape from reality. It’s caused me pain, joy, pride, happiness, sadness, and everything else in between. I’ve tried incredibly hard to pull myself away from the game, since this happened, but it keeps pulling me back in. Baseball chose me, and not the other way around. And yet there's a scar that will never go away every time I am around it. There was not a day in my life that I played this game for money. As a matter of fact, I offered to give all the money I had earned (and would earn) back, just to be able to keep playing. I don't think that anyone who was cheating would do that. That’s how much I love baseball. The effects that getting suspended (for something I would never dream of doing) had on me, are inexplicable. They caused depression and anxiety that made me seek out professional help. They caused a two year stretch in my life where I couldn’t enjoy the game that I have loved as much as I’ve ever loved anything. They caused strain on relationships in my life, and created a burden on my wife and parents that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. The reason I’m writing this message now isn’t for sympathy, or empathy from anyone. I’ve learned that people will think whatever they want to think, no matter how much I try to present information that should persuade them to think otherwise. The reason I’m writing it is because I want people to be informed. I want athletes to understand what could happen to them, and try to find a way to stop this from happening again. The documentary I am sharing here - “Doping Top Secret: GUILTY” - touches on how easy it is for subjects to test positive for banned substances, and tests people who get exposed via a simple touch of the skin on their hand, neck, and arm without ever ingesting the drug. youtu.be/8fX5gVgFxSI?si… When the documentary was released, myself and @KentEmanuel wanted to know if DHCMT (the drug we were accused of having taken) was used for the study. Until very recently, we were being told that they couldn’t divulge that information. Now they have published the article confirming what we already knew. It was in fact one of the drugs used for the study, and that each individual who was touched on the surface of their skin by the drug, tested positive for the same “trace metabolites” that we did for up to fifteen days. I continue to fear for the well being of athletes who are subject to drug testing (not because I believe that any one governing body would intentionally try to compromise innocent athletes) and implore people to understand the counter effects of what this system has done. No innocent athlete deserves to have their reputations tarnished or the sport they love taken away from them. For many of us, the ripple effects went far beyond the obvious financial implications, and fundamentally altered the course of our lives. Thanks for reading/watching/learning. And hopefully, the next time someone is accused and puts their hand up to say “I’m innocent,” we won’t be so quick to rush to judgement…
