Why Goodbye, Lara Feels Like a Failed Reworking of Yurikuma Arashi A lot of people like to compare Goodbye Lara to Revolutionary Girl Utena. But if you ask me, both thematically and structurally, it feels much more like a new attempt to deconstruct and rework Yurikuma Arashi. Unfortunately, the result is disastrous. Ikuhara is generally remembered for his boldness, surrealism, and heavy use of symbolism. I completely agree with that assessment, but I think something important often gets overlooked: having a bold and distinctive artistic style does not mean he is incapable of basic dramatic construction. Of course, Ikuhara is no master screenwriter, and using artistic expression itself to push the narrative forward is extremely common in his work. But those extraordinary audiovisual experiences are still built on top of characters and narrative frameworks that are fundamentally solid. People are often so dazzled by the flashy presentation that they forget about the foundation underneath it. It is a little like bass in music production: buried at the bottom of the mix, easy to overlook, but absolutely indispensable. Which finally brings me to the actual point: why do I call Goodbye Lara a failed imitation? When it comes purely to artistic direction, I am actually willing to give director Koide a fair amount of credit. You can clearly see Ikuhara's influence on him, and he does not simply copy Ikuhara wholesale. He tries to incorporate some of his own sensibilities as well. Even if his personal style is not distinctive enough yet, and the direction consequently lacks truly memorable compositions, he is still, by the standards of today's anime industry, clearly a director who takes visual presentation seriously. But does he take the other components of a work just as seriously? The writing, for example. Or the characters. Yurikuma Arashi depicts two races that hate each other. Its heroine begins as a human who despises bears, yet by the end she cries out that she wants to become a bear herself. By abandoning prejudice, she undergoes an actual transformation and completes a meaningful process of personal growth. The thematic resemblance to Goodbye Lara is obvious. Once again, we have two races that hate one another. Once again, the heroine ultimately becomes a member of the other race, completing what the story presents as a kind of "transformation." So where does Goodbye Lara fail? First, the heroine of Yurikuma Arashi genuinely hates bears from the beginning because of her environment and her experiences. That hatred is real, understandable, and narratively justified. Precisely because of that, her eventual transformation gives the story greater weight and can actually persuade the audience. What about Lara? She is a mermaid, yet from the very first episode she already longs for the human world. We never really see her struggle. We never see her suffer over this contradiction. She does not hate humans. If anything, when confronted with the hatred her own species holds toward humanity, her main reaction seems to be confusion. She feels less like someone caught between two opposing peoples and more like an outsider who never truly belonged to either one. The director effectively gives up on portraying her emotional attachment to her own species. Once that is removed, the hatred produced by her upbringing—and the internal conflict that should logically follow from it—becomes irrelevant. From beginning to end, Lara's primary dilemma is simply that she, as an individual, is going to disappear. Under those circumstances, when she finally becomes human, what exactly is supposed to be emotionally moving about it? Yes, some of the lines sound cool. "I want to live in a world where you exist." "we were born to love" But dialogue without the necessary dramatic groundwork is still just dialogue. You can pile as many sophisticated concepts onto it as you like—"true love," which the series establishes as one of its central themes from the very beginning—but to the audience, without proper characterization and narrative development, those ideas remain little more than grandiose slogans. Words themselves do not possess some inherently profound power. Stories give words power. Characters give words power. That is what allows a line to become magical. So when the director confronts the very themes he himself has placed at the center of the story, how much sincerity is actually behind them? I do not dislike the whole "moving to big city" aspect of the story. I also think Lara's everyday life is genuinely pleasant to watch. But what does any of that actually have to do with "true love"? If someone has not yet learned how to walk properly but insists on trying to run, the result is usually disastrous. I sincerely wish that creators making commercial works would first make sure they have produced something coherent, complete, and fundamentally solid before using it as a vehicle for their personal artistic ideals.

Zack Snyder says he didn’t want to make comic book movies in the way that Marvel does. “[Marvel is] like an amusement park ride, right? The ups, the drops, the kind of cruising part, and then another drop. At the end, you’re like, ‘Wow, that was crazy, that was awesome.’ I had
