There’s an essential sort of iconoclasm in this type of anti-Constantine reading of church history, as if it would have been better if 1400 years of Western humanity’s story had never existed.
I think of how much happier I am now that I see the beauty of good old fashioned middle American patriotism, and how much time is wasted by academics high on our own self-righteous convictions that we’ve somehow morally transcended because we don’t appreciate our own country.

Also, the diagnosis of a condition does not, of itself, necessitate a pharmaceutical treatment path as almost all of those conditions are helped by behavioral intervention, CBT, etc. so it's simply a false dichotomy to posit drugs v. behavioral engagement.
There is such a thing as over-prescription and over-diagnosis in the current moment, but this is an extraordinarily irresponsible thing for a pastor to say regarding real, mental health conditions and neurological divergences.

Anyway. It’s hard for me to without my distain of such arrogant ignorance. And I worry for those under his teaching who are led to suffer needlessly because of him.
If you want to talk about big pharma, over prescription, and over diagnosis, I’m with you. These are all realities. But they do NOT negate the reality that some people need and benefit from therapy and medication. For many godly people these common grave goods are life saving.
This teaching is destructive and deeply detached from reality.
It took me years to get the treatment I needed,m because of this teaching (in part), and it took the reassurance of spiritual mentors (not from that church) to persuade me that therapy wasn’t a sin or ungodly.
Hard to describe how disgusted and angry I am at these comments. I attended a church highly influenced by MacArthur, and while there were good people there, they did embrace the error that medication is sinful or wrong.
