Trolling for interesting sentences, found this: "He passed his fingers over his gray-yellow, short-cropped mustache."—Sholem Asch, THE NAZARENE, 6 Later, the rest. Now, the vivid, simple words, the pair of hyphenated adjectives, and the phrasal verb "passed over."

Really like Ian Frazier's story in *The New Yorker*, "Pumper's Corner," which takes me back to western Oklahoma (yes, where I grew up!). But Ian—Ian and editors—you used "gimlet" twice in adjoining paragraphs. Way too lazy.
Oh, no! On my favorite newsletter, *Quartz*, I just read "Every company should trial a four-day work week" as a heading. Please, people, just use "try." Let's not try to be cool by making our nouns into verbs.

Today marks the start of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Shanah Tovah to all! This image is from a medieval mahzor, a Jewish prayer book used during the High Holidays 🍎🍯
Misconception about "consensus" and "consensus of opinion": "consensus" means general agreement or shared opinions on an issue or issues; "opinion" is unnecessary. "General consensus" is also a tautology because consensus implies some level of agreement among everyone.
@PBoPC Good for you! Some of us have to maintain these distinctions. Words have very specific meanings, and I wish more people were like you and realized that. I write this hopefully!
An unapologetic piece about the importance of teaching grammar on my blog Gramatica cbethburch.com/gramatica

Mourning the loss of Philip Roth, Jewish literary giant. He wrote the Jewish American experience with complexity and humor. May his memory be a blessing ❤️
@PBoPC I don't know why people have to be mean just for the sake of meanness. Sociopaths.
@rmcoker No worries. I think I'm on track with my piles of want-to-reads!
Wow. Lauren Groff's interview in NYT's "By the Book" rocks! Wonderfully full, articulate, and passionate. Can't believe I'm reading it two days late. nytimes.com/2018/05/24/boo…
Great day for making two loaves of banana bread—rainy, cloudy, cool. Baking is good for days like this. #SaturdayMorning
What do U.S. Senator John McCain and 20th-century English writer Virginia Woolf have in common? They both use EPISTROPHE, a rhetorical device. Check out more on my Gramatica blog: www.cbethburch/gramatica
New post on Gramatica today (after a long hiatus: sorry). Find out about anaphora, a scheme of repetition.
Make your prose musical! A new blog post on Gramatica gives you some ideas for using assonance and alliteration in your writing. Check it out at cbethburch.com/gramatica
Best Movie Pan Ever: "In this numbingly ludicrous science-fiction drama, written and directed by Alex Garland, a talented cast of actors play undeveloped characters delivering leaden dialogue in a haphazard story that's filmed with a bland slickness." ( @NewYorker, 5 March). Wow!
Polysyndeton! Last week's Gramatica blog post that I forgot to tweet out. cbethburch.com/polysyndeton/
If you live in the Northeast and you're snowed in tomorrow, catch up on the Figures of Speech series on my Gramatica blog—great reading for a snowy day! cbethburch.com/gramatica
