I stopped posting to twitter some time ago over concerns about its ownership and direction. It seems many in the scientific community did too. I just made a bluesky account with the handle @I-enjoy-apples and will continue my infrequent posting on new publications etc. there.

New paper out on QTL for skin russet formation in Honeycrisp-derived breeding germplasm: doi.org/10.1007/s11295… The results will help to inform breeding decisions for this sometimes problematic trait.

This is an issue in some germplasm collections too - sometimes small fruited Malus hybrids get mistaken for M.sylvestris.

New paper out - The majority of the Malus sieversii and many of the M.orientalis and M.sylvestris held in the USDA collection have admixture with domestic apple: tinyurl.com/3ztu4x68 This potentially impacts the results and conclusions of previous studies using this material.

New paper out on pedigree reconstruction of triploid apple cultivars: doi.org/10.1002/ppp3.1… We found triploidy to be a dead-end in apple pedigrees. Also, we include the full pedigree of Cox's Orange Pippin and one parent of the oldest US cultivar Roxbury Russet, among others.

New methods paper on the apple pedigree reconstruction project out: doi.org/10.1093/hr/uha… The paper describes a test to order parent-offspring duo relationships. Very specific application, but I've since used it >500 times to order relationships in the greater project.

New paper out on pedigree reconstruction of the University of Minnesota apple breeding program. doi.org/10.21273/HORTS… This is the first pedigree reconstruction paper out that is making use of some of the new techniques colleagues and I developed - SPLoSH + POR tests.

New coauthored paper out: mdpi.com/2073-4425/13/2… Not with apples this time! I assisted in a paper about kale diversity. We used shared haplotype information via the same methods I've used with apples as a proxy for genetic distance. This information outperformed raw SNP data.

I've read a lot of papers about Malus sylvestris genetics but I've not read about anyone doing anything culinary with them. So I made a pie with some. Their high acidity and tannin wouldn't lend themselves well to a traditional pie so I made a tasty savory one with pork and sage.
