The Green Party is reportedly considering giving "all workers who menstruate" an additional 36 days' paid leave a year. It goes without saying that this is a bonkers policy. What's even more bonkers is that it's hard to have a sensible discussion about it - give the Greens leader Zack Polanski believes women can have penises. On that basis, they may as well offer anyone an extra three days off a month, so long as they claim to menstruate. But let's assume for a moment that the Greens know that only women menstruate. And that there's no such thing as "workers who menstruate." How exactly is this progress? Women have spent decades trying to convince employers that our biology should not hold us back at work. Now the proposal is that women should be entitled to an extra seven weeks' paid leave a year because we menstruate. Of course, some women experience debilitating conditions such as endometriosis, PMDD and PCOS. They deserve proper medical care, understanding and support in the workplace. But surely the answer is to ensure employers take individual women's health needs seriously - not to introduce a blanket policy that risks reinforcing every stereotype women have spent decades trying to overcome. Honestly, if someone had set out to propose a policy that would make employers think twice about hiring women, they could hardly have come up with a better one. Link below 👇
