Irish Baby Names In The States @IrishNamesUSA

The Irish for a dead name (name assigned at birth no longer used by a trans person) is ainm cealaithe, which translates literally as rescinded or cancelled name. 🏳️‍⚧️ #TransDayOfVisibility

Also, relevant to this feed, named Aoibhéann.

Friend let me know her baby was born healthy and weighed 8 lbs 3 oz. Immediately, my brain went to one of the best lines in all of cinema. The Snapper. youtu.be/rvzLTSk4gjs

Nameberry are predicting that Kylian (French form of Cillian/Killian) is going to break through in a big way in 2023. Cillian overtook Killian in Ireland around the time 28 Days Later was a hit...

Name seen in the wild: Kialeigh. Young adult born in the early aughts when the Kaylee/Kylie sounding names were huge in the states. @Swistle is this a new one to you?

But many of my favorite names are buried deeper in the data, and I'll check in on them another day.

Boys in the top 1000: Sean (363), Rory (295), Finn (184), Declan (105), Connor (96), Ryan (66), Nolan (60), Aiden (26) remain very popular with Liam hanging strong at number 1. Cillian (spelled so) cracked the top 1000 in 2019 and is still there; Killian is at 347.

The 2021 US SS baby name data has been out for a few weeks. Taking a few minutes to peek in on some of my favorites in the top 1000: Bridget, still hanging out in mid-700s Maeve, shot up like whoa to spot 124 Saoirse, still on the list in at 813

Of course, the spelling Killian is very popular already (ranked 351 in 2020). That "hard C subbed with a K" is common. Like Kian is ranked in the 450s, and cracked the top 1000 way back in 2000. BUT Cian still hasn't cracked it.

Aislinn climbed 144 places and cracked the top 1000. Predict it will also land in the 800s for 2021 data

GUESS THREAD Waiting for 2021 name data from Social Security. Between 2019 and 2020, the boys name Cillian climbed 112 places and broke into the top 1000 for the first time. Prediction: it will be in the 800s when 2021 data comes out

Fiadh is now the top girl's name in Ireland! Here's an article I wrote about its rise a few years ago: jrnl.ie/5024546

Ran across this piece from @theirishfor written in 2018. I didn't include the literal meaning of "orla" without the Ó in my recent thread about the name, but you'll see it there. thejournal.ie/readme/the-iri…

From the CSO, it looks like Orla reached peak popularity in Ireland in 1980 (361 babies, name ranked No. 22).

I did a quick search of a sample of other years, to see if it is a name that disappeared and reappeared. Weirdly, in 1945, there were 6 baby BOYS named Orla, and I am not even gonna try to figure out what that was about.

Name of the day: Orla/Orlaith/Órla/Órlaith I think that I first encountered this name in a Maeve Binchy novel that I read sometime in the 1990s, but I can't recall which. The name has never cracked the top 1000 in the states.
