Religious freedom is a bedrock principle of international law that every member of the United Nations has pledged to uphold. Banning Muslim teachers and students from attending public school unless they remove their hijabs is a persistent threat to religious freedom in several European countries and several former Soviet states, now including Azerbaijan. We stand in solidarity with Muslim teachers, students and families in Azerbaijan and we strongly condemn the government’s bigoted and fascist hijab ban. Banning Muslim teachers and students from public school if they wear hijab represents an attack on not only the Muslim community, but the basic principle of religious freedom. Countries that claim to uphold religious freedom must permit teachers and students to wear clothing and symbols associated with their faith, whether a hijab, a cross, a kippa, or a turban–or decline to wear such clothing. We call on the @StateDept to urge Azerbaijan to reverse its hijab ban and guarantee religious freedom to all.

Wonderful to see that @SenTedCruz has taken time away from perusing pornography on X and vacationing in Cancun to indulge in his other hobby: obsessing over our civil rights group. We are flattered. For the record, no one asked the Texas State Board of Education to censor history. Public schools should teach history, including the history of global religions. What public schools should not do is force teachers and students to single out and denigrate a particular religion, in this case Islam. We would object just as strongly if a state wanted to force teachers to tell students that Christianity itself is responsible for the genocide of indigenous populations, or the burning of witches, or the mass enslavement and forced conversion of kidnapped Africans, or the cross-burnings of the KKK, or the bombing of abortion clinics. Doing so would be an insult to Christian students, an affront to the education system, and a violation of the First Amendment. The same is true here.
