@aviatrixtrc Flat IT/OT networks keep showing up in these chains. Cheapest fixes first: put scanners and warehouse Wi-Fi in their own zone, allow only the conduits the WMS actually needs, and make sure nothing on the Wi-Fi side can reach PLC ports directly.
@antopatrex1 Agree on the software moat for mobile robots. Fixed installs are different: line-side inspection, kiosks, gateways. Power isn't from a battery there, and long-life SKUs, standard Windows/Linux images and lots of I/O often matter more than peak TOPS.
@Fortinet Certification helps, but the gains come from the design: zones and conduits per IEC 62443-3-2, one cell per zone, only the protocols each conduit needs, remote access through one monitored path. The firewall enforces the plan; it doesn't replace it.
@EvanKirstel The network point is real. Plenty of plants are adding edge AI to cells that still share one flat VLAN with the office. Segment first, then deploy compute: a camera + edge box per cell is far easier to secure up front than to retrofit later.
@cnxsoft@BIOSTAR_Global Four serial ports plus an 8-bit DIO header is the bit that matters for retrofits; plenty of machines still talk RS-232/485. Curious what operating temperature range it's rated for, since that usually decides whether it can live fanless in a cabinet.
@MFG_SMB The hardware layer deserves a plan too. Local agents will end up on a box next to the machines, so pick something fanless, with serial + dual Ethernet for legacy controllers, and a long-life SKU so the stack isn't rebuilt every 18 months.
Omron paying $675m for OnLogic says it loudly: the PC next to the line is now strategic. Our take: pick edge hardware you can source, service and swap for 10+ years, whoever owns the badge. What matters most to you: lifecycle, I/O or price? #IndustrialPC#EdgeComputing
@ludwim_i The unglamorous layer is where uptime lives. Line-side PCs have to survive heat, dust, vibration and 10-year lifecycles, and still be serviceable by a tech at 3am. Good to see it valued properly.
@BNTBriefing From the hardware side, the gating factor is less compute and more deployment reality: temperature range, I/O for cameras and fieldbus, long-life SKUs, and remote management. That's what decides whether edge AI leaves the pilot.
@PatchOrPass@CISAgov Usually it's the box nobody thinks of as a computer: the panel PC or gateway on the shop floor that 'just works' and hasn't seen a firmware update since it went in. Worth putting on the asset list.
@theSpacecyborg@BrainChip_inc Neuromorphic on an M.2 card is a good fit for fanless industrial PCs: low power means no extra thermal headroom needed. The over-the-air model updates are what we'd watch most, since line-side boxes rarely get maintenance windows.
@fredaayao1@BowTiedCrocodil Solid advice. One thing to add for anyone moving from homelab to a small site: pick a box with Intel NICs that are well supported on FreeBSD, and give the IoT/OT VLANs their own physical port if you can.
@opnsense Thanks for the quick fix. Tip for anyone running OPNsense on edge appliances at remote sites: schedule a maintenance window and keep a console or out-of-band path ready before updating.
@Henry_Avery666 Question 3 is underrated. A 60-day pilot on a fanless industrial PC next to the line tells you more than any deck: real thermals, real network, real data. If it can't run with the uplink unplugged, it isn't edge.
@N23Dprinting@OmronAutomation@OnLogic Bit of both. One vendor across controller + edge PC simplifies support, but the escape hatch is open interfaces: OPC UA/MQTT out, standard x86/Linux images, documented I/O. If you can swap the box without rewriting the line, it's not lock-in.
