(1/3) It’s #NationalPetDay! #JamesMadison and #DolleyMadison didn’t have a #pet #dog or #cat, but they did have a painting described as “Landscape with Hunting Party,” which probably included hunting dogs like this painting (now displayed in the South Passage) does.

(2/3) Some members of the #enslaved community may have kept a dog as a pet. Montpelier #archaeologists found a dog’s grave a few feet behind a dwelling in the South Yard, which suggests that the dog was the well-loved companion of the enslaved family who lived there.
