Went for a quick pre-dinner walk to the top of the hill - it’s simply stunning here in the Peak District ⛰️
Glorious hostel views to start Day 2 of supporting the @YorkEnvironment first year field trip to Castleton and Sheffield. Today the students will be exploring two museums in Sheffield, learning about its industrial history and doing some non-participant observation 🏭
Day 1 of supporting @YorkEnvironment first years on their field trip to Castleton and Sheffield. Lots of street audits done in Castleton - the students seemed to particularly enjoy wearing the hi-vis jackets! Very quaint and lovely scenery 🌳
Currently on a very interesting holiday in Uzbekistan, following the route of the old Silk Road. Here I am in Bukhara 🇺🇿
One of the oldest Archive records of plants in our Gardens is this 'Catalogue of Trees and Shrubs" from 1773. It was found in Windsor Castle library almost 200 years later and transferred by the Royal Librarian to the Keeper of the Herbarium & Library, Arthur Cotton.
I forgot to train my Hull-grown poinsettia over the past few months to develop its coloured leaves, but it’s still going strong a year after I bought it (despite my somewhat erratic watering!). I’ll try next year to get its ‘candy cinnamon’ colour (not the usual red!) back 🪴

Pleased to say that this morning I passed my progression review, and will now be moving into the third year of my PhD at @YorkEnvironment! I look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the year ahead 🌍🌿 Here’s a celebratory picture of gorse and heather at Goonhilly!
Weird wildflowers - Take a look at the gorse on @BBOWT's Greenham Common & look out for bright red threads of Dodder, a strange parasitic plant, weaving its way across the gorse, look closer and you might see its tiny pink flower clusters @BSBIbotany @wildflower_hour
That’s a wrap! It’s been such a great week at the @RGS_IBG conference, my first ever conference. So many great speakers, lots of networking and a stunning setting to match. Thanks to @RGS_IBGhe and @PGF_RGSIBG for organising this week - bring on next year! 🌍🌏🌎 #RGSIBG23
Today I represented @YorkEnvironment with my poster presentation at the @RGS_IBG conference! Was great to hear the work of the other delegates and to discuss my work with a wide range of academics. One more day of great talks to go! 🌏 #RGSIBG23
Nice end to day two of the @RGS_IBG conference. Some great talks on ‘experiencing environmental gentrification’ chaired by @UTSC, a chairs plenary from @RGS_IBGhe with @UCLA and @UninorteCO, finished with a postgrad social organised by @PGF_RGSIBG. Will sleep well! 🌎 #RGSIBG23
Yesterday was the first day of the @RGS_IBG Annual International Conference, kicking off with the welcome to postgrads from @RGS_IBGhe and @PGF_RGSIBG. Really useful to hear about non-academic career paths for PhDs and to meet the other PGR attendees! 🌍 #RGSIBG23
Really interesting to sit on these discussions today and learn what goes into a creating a Decision Support Tool. I’ve noted lots of interesting points that will be useful later in my own research when I create a DST for assessing the feasibility of productive gorse use!

I’ve just got back from a much needed week of r&r in Cornwall. It’s reminded me of how lucky I was to spend three years living in such a naturally stunning part of the country. We too easily take for granted what nature is on our doorstep. Kernow: I’ll be back as soon as I can!
*clears throat* Everyone meet our new employee of the month, Penelope D. Hog. Here she is going about Important Hedgehog Business outside our museum entrance. And here's what you need to know:
