I read a chapter of AI Engineering. Interesting to see the pricing mechanics for output and input tokens, why batching is 50% off, and so on.

Studying cost compression with LLMs. Some progress: 1. understood why input-output-cache tokens are all differently priced 2. switching models can cost more because of cache reset 3. TTLs and pings to keep cache warm- check inter-arrival times for output tokens being called

Smoothing helps negative infinity move to a large negative value but not enough to send the page to invisibility.

Scoring could involve logs of zero probability, which are harsh. Example: not mentioning “defense” on a crim lawyer page, and being scored negative infinity for the query “criminal defense lawyer Seattle”. Page would have ranked for “crim lawyer Seattle”

Smoothing algos that I worked on back in uni resurfaced in studying entities for GEO / AEO. Who would have known?

Ranked a new legal website for its head term in 2 weeks. Rank 5 for now, and also featured in AI overviews. Two leads so far.

For British Columbia searches, Gemini’s results highlight lawyers that have K.C. (King’s Counsel) behind their name. Gemini may be smaller than ChatGPT though this is a trend to watch.

Being highly decorated isn’t necessarily correlated with customer service. Future note to revisit if LLMs are tilting towards authority (big pubs) or consumer signals (reviews)

Local results in Gemini and ChatGPT show divergence. Incumbents are more likely to be entrenched in Gemini than ChatGPT. At least for legal, Gemini is prioritizing more “peer” signals than consumer voices.

To test: are people more likely to convert from clicking a SERP result on Google (click, subconscious reinforcement) or ChatGPT answers (deferral to perceived all-knowing authority)
