Hyperscaler capex got us here, but the buyer base is broadening. Inference is now 55-60% of compute demand and enterprise use is climbing fast. Even if training spend wobbles, adoption keeps moving up the S-curve, and so does demand for chips, data centers and the power behind them.

Six bidders. Same turbine. Same documents. Same site visit. Offers ranged from $5M to $22M. In July, the district that governs Walt Disney World sold its retired cogen plant: a GE LM6000 Sprint, a 61.5 MW generator, a steam turbine, HRSG and transformer. Demolition/asset recovery firm: $22.0M (won) Power plant operator: $20.0M Surplus equipment dealer: $20.0M Turbine reseller: $10.1M GE Vernova, the OEM: $6.5M Municipal power agency: $5.0M One sealed round. No independent borescope. A procurement-portal notice most data center developers never saw. Removal bundled with the sale. @PowerBridgeIA Add delivered cost to that list: dismantling, heavy haul, rigging and install. On used units that can be a third of the bill, and it should be scoped before price, not after.

@JigarShahDC Which is why a refurbished unit at a fraction of that capital cost is so compelling for large loads, if the buyer can see its real condition first: verified hours, an independent borescope, milestone-based payment.

@JesseJenkins At $3,000-4,400/kW and a 2030 date, secondary-market turbines pencil even after a full overhaul. What's missing is a clean way to buy them: verified maintenance records, an independent inspection, and payment released in milestones.

Microsoft walking away from a 23,000-GPU site in Essex because grid power won't arrive until the 2030s is the AI buildout in one headline. The GPUs are ready. The building is ready. The megawatts aren't. A site with a firm power date is the scarce asset now. Everything else is a land deal.
