A screen without contact. Which side do you call? When do you switch? Where’s the support? This week: the 3 Flat Nail Screen and how a player simply standing at the nail can create coverage confusion and open downhill attacks. Read below 👇 🗞newsletter.slappinglass.com/posts/nail-in-…

‼️ Sticky Words Sunday ‼️ FLAT GHOST Simple and EXTREMELY effective. This is a staple of Daigneault that I love. We call it ‘flat’. - screen is below the 3PT line with butt to the baseline - typically used in inverted or G2G actions - punishes a switch - great end of clock/end of game when switching is assumed - usually forces the D to put 2 on the ball, creating a 2 on 1 on the weakside Common mistakes: - setting the screen to high, pulling the pop out of range. Must be set ~ around the nail. - killing the dribble early Adding a 45 cut to this action really stretches the D and beats virtually any gap coverage. 🎥 @tucker_thorson

Valencia Basket U22 🇪🇸 — Press Break Sometimes the best answer to aggressive defense is ... to be even more aggressive. Simple but effective press break: clear the middle and let the inbounder sprint through it. The result? An open corner three within 5 seconds.

If you're a team that sees a lot of gap help and stunts, this is an incredibly easy and lethal way to attack it. Cut the corner, drift the 45. Great for DDM teams or actions that attack the middle of the floor.

Who Should We Attack Defensively? Built this Sportscode window to help answer that question when scouting. It tracks each defender’s PPP across different play types (PnR, ISO, handoffs, cuts, etc.) and compares their performance to the team average. I also wrote a script that automatically grades each defender from elite to weak based on their performance. No manual grading needed. The goal isn’t just to find the weakest defender. It’s to figure out HOW we should attack them. The data points us toward the matchup. The film tells us why.

Introducing the Playbook Series. Paid subscribers to the Substack will get access to this feature. My goal is to roll out about 1 a week. These will be different than my normal breakdowns as they will feature more film and less written analysis. First one is live right now!
