In case anyone is still wondering why UC graduate student workers are striking...My yearly pay is 27k-30k and I have officially paid 20k in rent for 2022. 20k in rent ONLY. 🤡
@Jordanalevinson You make 10k more than we do in NJ.
@Jordanalevinson I made $0.00 a year in medical school as a student. My rent was irrelevant.
@Jordanalevinson I sympathize. A lot of Midwest schools offer ~12K per year. Housing is much cheaper, but not *that* much cheaper. When I was a grad student my post-tuition, post-rent take home pay was $350 per month. So I found some scholarships to apply for which helped immensely.
@Jordanalevinson Not blaming but trying to understand. Why did you accept it in the first place?
@Jordanalevinson @readmoreyall I started a PhD program at UCSD in 2001 and my stipend was $18k. My rent was $650/month. Got an NSF fellowship for $30k the next year and was barely enough to cover me … and that was 20 years ago.
