this might be a dumb question but why isn’t every ball park the same dimensions? like every other team sport is lol
Because the first ballparks were built within the confines of a city block. City blocks vary in size and somewhat in shape. The reason, Fenway Park’s left field wall is so short (310 feet), for example, is because there is/was a street directly behind the left field wall. The wall (known as the Green Monster) is (currently) higher than any other wall in baseball to make up for the fact that the wall is such a short distance from home plate.
@MLBcathedrals @BaseballGabb I was told by a Fenway Tour guide that the Monster was created primarily because the owner at the time was sick of people watching the games for free from across Lansdowne Street. Obviously it functions to accomplish both things (& please correct me if I was told wrong).
