I am heartbroken to share this..the @NewsHour’s beloved long-time Friday night analyst Mark Shields, who for decades wowed us with his encyclopedic knowledge of American politics, his sense of humor and mainly his big heart, has passed away at 85, with his wife Anne at his side.
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour Listening to Mark and David talk with Judy every Friday night during the Trump years was like listening to your grandpa say ‘everything will be alright’. He didn’t say that but his grasp of history made me feel less scared, less alone in this world. He was balm for the soul.
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour I remember him as the guy who was supposed to represent the opinions of the left on a public broadcasting network in a democracy. And for the last 2 decades straight, he agreed with the right, as our democracy was being dismantled: meaning there was no pro-democracy voice on air
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour So sorry to read this. Sincere condolences.
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour Mark would be saddened to see how your show has taken a decidedly left leaning slant on the news. The ML News Hour was the best news program in its day. PBS News Hour will not be remembered or held in the same regard.
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour Is Pat Buchanan the only one still alive from the original Capital Gang?
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour Grew up watching Mark Shields on the @NewsHour. He was a gracious and insightful observer of politics. His intellect and decency always showed through during his commentary. I wish this generation had a Mark Shields. Will keep looking, while remembering Mark fondly.
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour Nicely said. I grew up watching him spar with others.
@JudyWoodruff @NewsHour I adored Mark Shields. He was my Friday night date. His wit, civility and incredible knowledge of just about everything was admired and appreciated by me and so many bi-national viewers. My condolences to all who loved him
