The centralization of power has very useful functions in very specific circumstances. For instance, the Captain of a Ship has the unilateral authority to command the ship as he pleases, not without repercussion of course. We give someone central authority to make fast and strategic choices. At least for the United States, the power vested in our Executive has become too much, and the person who holds the seat has become much less accountable over time.

it has been a dumb fucking dictatorship since literally forever. The start of the Bolshevik movement was justifiable, but the subsequent totalitarian control of Stalin was an unjustified dictatorship. We were only ever allies in the 1940s because of the second world war. When the break up of the soviet union happened, it was essentially oligarchic mob control, and a connected Putin was able to form a government from these connections that allowed him to become dictator of the country. Ukraine was, and probably still is, a very corrupt country, but it was and still is an enemy of our enemy, Russia. We CAN and SHOULD influence their government with NATO membership to make it a less corrupt, and more democratic, country. It is an incredibly long process, but yes Ukraine will be an incredible ally when they eventually achieve NATO membership. ESPECIALLY with their veteran fighting force.
