Everything's here: keephaven.co/ssd
Free, AGPL. One download, about 6 MB — it fetches the rest, writes the drive, reads all 36 GB back and prints PASS or FAIL.
A 64-bit Windows PC, 8 GB of RAM, a free USB 3 port, and a USB SSD of 64 GB or more.
Why there's no box any more: TrendForce forecast flash contract prices up 55-60% in one quarter this year, memory up 90-95%. A $799 box with a 1 TB SSD in it stopped making sense, so I open sourced the boxes. Anyone with a Pi 5 can build one.
Keephaven Photos SSD. The same Keephaven I open sourced last month, running on a Windows PC from a USB drive.
Write the drive once. Then plug it in and go.
Free and open source, AGPL, same as the boxes. No account, no subscription. Your photos stay on your drive.
Good to know: it's nightly, not instant. It needs Remote access on both boxes. And you need a second Raspberry Pi 5 with an NVMe drive.
The software is free and open source.

The backup box only receives.
It turns down every delete request, so deleting a file at home doesn't delete it there. The connection can't be used to read the backup out. And each box remembers the other and won't talk to anything else.
We did it. The offsite backup, the "1" in 3-2-1, without a cloud.
A second Keephaven at another house backs up your main one every night. Your box, talking to your other box. Nobody in the middle, us included.

A Keephaven Home Edition runs six apps — photos, movies, music, audiobooks, books, news. But a lot of people came for one thing: the photos.
So there's a Photos edition now. Just Immich, nothing else. The whole box goes to your photos — lighter to run, same sealed box you flash yourself with no account and nothing leaving it.
Pick the full box or Photos-only on the download page:

@xpolinapolina Nothing's for sale. It's free and open source — you flash it onto your own Pi 5 and SSD. It does what a NAS does,
yeah. The setup's the difference, it's done from your phone, for people who'd never build one.
github.com/dafarusd/keeph…
We just made installing Keephaven yourself a lot easier.
It's a sealed box — no screen, no login, you set it up from your phone, and our boxes carry the setup password on a sticker. Flash your own from the open source and there's no sticker, so people were booting a second SD card just to read the password off the drive.
Now: plug a monitor or TV into the Pi's HDMI port. The Wi-Fi name and password sit on the screen until setup's done, then they're gone. No SD card.
Already running Keephaven? It's in the update — tap Install.

@slowboy24629857 The software's free. The box in the photo is a Raspberry Pi 5 and an SSD in an aluminum case — you get those parts yourself and flash it. What you need is on the page.

You can now turn off the apps you don't use on a Keephaven.
Settings has a new Apps section. Untick an app and it stops running. Your files stay put, and you can turn it back on any time.

The Home Edition runs six apps — photos, movies, music, audiobooks, books, news. Until now all six ran whether you used them or not.
Untick one and its tile leaves your home screen and its network folder is hidden. Photos always stays on, the other five are up to you.
Already running Keephaven? It's in the update — tap Install. Nothing changes until you untick something.
@chloeblissl Agreed, that's pretty much all I use day to day. I do love having Jellyfin when I'm camping. Scary movie on the projector, white sheet tied between trees, lol. The full version now lets you turn off the apps you don't use, new section in Settings.

@mooon_1123 Thank you. The full box got the same idea today. There's a new Apps section in Settings — untick the ones you don't use and they stop running. Files stay put, and you can turn them back on later.
