Text: tip 6 One more tip from working with actors recently: look for the musicality in the speech – think jazz. Vary the rhythm, speed, weight, cadence. Exaggerate the contrasts. Be nimble so the words are full of surprises. Monotony induces sleep. ken-rea.com
Text: tip 5 A powerful Russian technique is to plot the changes of initiative in a monologue and attack each of them with new energy. In a duologue we can see the initiative being passed back and forth between the two characters. Let me show you how: ken-rea.com
Text: tip 4 The structure in a well-written monologue will often be built on a cumulative argument to persuade the other character. Look for the points that mark changes of strategy in the argument. Play those changes to give the text focus and energy. ken-rea.com
Text: tip 3 Actors often emphasise the wrong words in a text, which makes the meaning fuzzy. Once you’ve broken up the text into individual thoughts, each with its own energy, identify the key word within each thought and colour that. Be specific. ken-rea.com
