Happy to share my latest on capitalism and the underdevelopment of the US South - it’s one of the most important things I’ve ever written.

Presented an early version of this paper at a conference on inequality in Paris last year (headlined by Thomas Piketty). A famous historian tried to criticize the idea, but the economist-President of the Roosevelt Institute put him back in his seat - said I was right.😹
@KeriLeighMerrit Excellent piece. Clever use of the Roosevelt report. You make me wonder about the textile industry moving south in the 1880s and 1890s and how that fits into your larger points. That must have been an excellent conference!
@KeriLeighMerrit Solid piece. I wish more US historians would use rentier state theories to explain how external rents affected economic and political development of colonial and early America.
@KeriLeighMerrit This is great. My US South class just read a portion of that Roosevelt report in class yesterday. Getting ready to dive into Pete Daniel’s Lost Revolutions next.
