This airman climbed onto a burning bomber’s wing at 200mph. On 26 April 1944, during the Second World War, RAF flight engineer Norman Jackson tried to fight a fire beside his Lancaster’s fuel tank while the bomber was still flying. He had already completed 30 missions and was

March 24, 1944. A British Lancaster bomber is on its way home from a raid on Berlin when a German night fighter tears into it. The plane catches fire. The crew is ordered to bail out. In the tail turret, 21 year old gunner Nicholas Alkemade turns around to grab his parachute. It's on fire. Rear gunners on the Lancaster sat in a tiny, cramped turret at the very back of the plane. There was no room for a parachute in there with them, so it was stored just inside the fuselage. Alkemade opened the door and watched his parachute burn up in front of him. The flames were coming for him. His oxygen mask was melting. His clothes were starting to burn. He had two choices. Stay in the plane and burn alive. Or jump. Without a parachute. From around 18,000 feet. More than three miles up. He later said he decided he'd rather die quickly than burn. So he turned the turret, opened the doors, and threw himself backward into the night sky. He fell for what must have felt like forever. He said that at one point he felt strangely calm, like he was lying on a cloud, and assumed he was about to die. Then he blacked out. He woke up lying in deep snow beneath a stand of pine trees, staring up at the stars. The branches had broken his fall, and the snow had cushioned the landing. He had burns, cuts, and a badly twisted knee. That was it. No broken bones. The first thing he reportedly did was light a cigarette. He couldn't walk far, so he blew his whistle until Germans came and found him. And that's when his problems started. The Germans didn't believe him. Why would they? An enemy airman with no parachute, claiming he had just fallen out of the sky. They assumed he was a spy who had sneaked in somehow and was lying about it. The Gestapo interrogated him. Alkemade begged them to go look at the wreck of his bomber. So they did. They found the Lancaster's remains, and the burned harness from his parachute. The clips showed it had never even been attached. Everything matched his story. The Germans were so stunned that they gave him a written certificate confirming that he had fallen from his aircraft without a parachute and survived. His fellow prisoners in the POW camp reportedly treated him like a celebrity. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner at Stalag Luft III, the same camp made famous by the Great Escape. After the war he went back to an ordinary life in England. Factory work. A family. He lived until 1987. Three miles. No parachute. A cigarette in the snow.

From Facebook. This historic photograph captures a rare moment featuring three generations of British Kings in a single frame, taken in London on Armistice Day, 1922. From left to right: King George V (1865–1936) – The reigning monarch at the time of this photograph. He ruled from 1910 to 1936 and led the British Empire through World War I. Prince Edward, Prince of Wales (1894–1972)* – The eldest son, standing slightly behind in the center. He would later briefly reign as King Edward VIII in 1936 before his historic abdication. Prince Albert, Duke of York (1895–1952)* – The second son, standing on the right front. He would later reign as King George VI from 1936 to 1952, and was the father of Queen Elizabeth II. What They Wore: All three are seen wearing full military greatcoats with black mourning armbands, a formal mark of remembrance and respect worn during the official ceremony at the Cenotaph. Historical Context: This photograph was taken during the Armistice Day service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, the United Kingdom's national war memorial. November 11th marked the anniversary of the end of World War I, and the royal family led the nation's two-minute silence to honor the fallen. This image remains one of the few occasions where a reigning king was photographed alongside his two sons who would both go on to become kings. 🚨BREAKING: A revolutionary new cancer treatment called Histotripsy is showing incredible promise by literally liquefying tumors using focused sound waves—no surgery, no chemo, and no radiation needed. Developed by pioneers Dr. Zhen Xu and the late Dr. Charles Cain at the University of Michigan, this FDA-approved technology is now being used at leading hospitals like Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic. How it works: - A robotic arm delivers precise high-intensity ultrasound waves straight to the tumor. - These waves create tiny gas bubbles inside cancer cells that rapidly expand and collapse. - The mechanical force destroys the tumor cells, turning the mass into liquid debris that the body naturally clears away. - It also appears to stimulate the immune system to better recognize and attack remaining cancer cells. - Because it relies on mechanical disruption rather than heat or radiation, it spares healthy surrounding tissue. Patients often undergo the quick outpatient procedure and go home the same day. It is currently treating liver tumors, with trials expanding to kidney and brain cancers. This could be a game-changer in the fight against cancer.

🇬🇧A British submarine vanished with 61 men aboard. Eighteen months later, one of them walked into a British consulate in Turkey! On December 6, 1941, HMS Perseus struck an Italian mine off the Greek island of Kefalonia and plunged to the seabed. John Capes was trapped in the stern with three wounded men. Wearing a primitive Davis escape apparatus, he opened the hatch and began an almost unimaginable ascent, from roughly 170 feet (51,8 m) below the surface. Capes emerged alone into the freezing darkness. Then he swam nearly five miles to Kefalonia. Greek islanders found him and risked their lives to hide him from Italian occupation troops. For 18 months, they moved him between homes and villages before secretly carrying him by boat to Turkey. No one else aboard Perseus survived. For decades, some doubted Capes. He had been traveling as a passenger, so his name did not appear on the submarine’s crew list. His escape simply sounded impossible. Then, in 1997, divers found Perseus at 170 feet. Its stern escape hatch was open. Inside, crucial details matched Capes’s account. He had escaped a steel coffin beneath the sea, and ordinary Greek civilians had kept him alive. On their way to work, a rescue team spotted Gus, a stray puppy with a severely injured head and a shoelace tightly embedded around his neck. After hours of searching, they finally got Gus to safety and rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital. But the X-rays revealed an even more serious situation: Gus’s body was filled with pellet gun bullets. Veterinarians believed the shoelace may have been tied around his neck when he was still very young, gradually tightening as he grew. Gus underwent multiple surgeries, a blood transfusion, pain management, and months of rehabilitation. Step by step, with dedicated care from his veterinarians and rescue family, he began to heal, slowly learned to trust people again, and rediscovered the simple joys of being loved, playing, and feeling safe. Today, Gus is no longer the frightened puppy he once was. He has grown into a happy, playful boy full of life. His story shows how compassionate care and kindness can give a new beginning to an animal who had endured so much suffering. 🐶❤️
