@moveincircles @triggerpod You can argue that it is 'begging the question' but I think it is fairly uncontroversial that the change you refer to improves the human condition. Of course there are trade offs but that doesn't mean progress hasn't been made. The quote from @sapinker captures it perfectly.
Understand these points and try to pause if something has enraged you online. Take a moment, maybe draft a response and leave it a bit. Ideas and soft persuasion are some of our best tools for progress ❤️
- A lot of conversation is nonverbal and this is lost online. We would respond very differently in real conversation then we do online. - Never respond to trolls. Block. Responses are the oxygen they require.
There are some interesting takeaways into the research around arguing and persuasion: - People's desire in online arguments is not to have their mind changed. They fear 'losing' the argument online. We should try to change this - having your mind changed should be encouraged.
@definitely_fine @buffsoldier_96 Polish is the second language in the UK and yet Polish representation is close to non existent. And within these nationalities there are also people who are non-white. It is a complex area but just focusing on 'whiteness' as a negative may be a mistake. Wishing you well!
@definitely_fine @buffsoldier_96 Also within 'whiteness' there is a myriad of different cultures and peoples. If 'whiteness' is the focus then stories which aren't told which fall within that will be lost. This includes Romanians, Polish, Irish, Travelling Communities etc.

This is a principle I live my life by - I know a lot about a little. And the areas I don't know about I try to find out what the expert consensus is.

I respect people who have spent years of hard work and study to become experts in their field and I respect what the consensus of that field is.

@ZubyMusic There is a debate within science as to what methods are best but the consensus is with lockdowns. People fought in wars to protect wider society, including the elderly and vulnerable. We can do the same.
@ZubyMusic This is a disingenuous comparison @ZubyMusic. A novel virus with even a 0.1% mortality rate would result in death, and avoidable death, on a huge scale. There is a genuine discussion to be had about how long to lockdown, whether other methods can provide sufficient protection etc
Good article on the new prospective Covid-19 vaccine. Have to be cautious - nothing’s been peer-reviewed yet, and side effects can spring up quite late - but overall there’s legitimate reason to be optimistic. statnews.com/2020/11/09/cov…
