Supporting LGBTQIA+ people does not require pretending every decision made in our name is beyond criticism.
Solidarity is not silence.
If a community cannot survive scrutiny, it has a bigger problem than disagreement.
We spend a lot of time asking whether straight people are comfortable with queer stories.
I’m more interested in whether queer people recognise themselves in them.
A lot of people only support queer freedom when it looks tasteful, familiar and well-behaved.
The minute it gets loud, sexual, angry, strange or inconvenient, their tolerance develops terms and conditions.
A lot of queer adulthood is discovering that the life you were warned would be lonely, strange or difficult can actually be wildly, stubbornly, unexpectedly good.
There’s something delicious about queer people building lives we were once told we weren’t supposed to have, then making them look better than the approved version.
The LGBTQ+ community does not have to agree on everything.
But disagreement is not a permission slip to abandon each other.
If solidarity only survives consensus, it was never solidarity in the first place.
One of the great queer skills is reinvention: new city, new name, new career, new life.
We’ve been ignoring the script for generations.
Sometimes that is not trauma. Sometimes that is freedom.
Some people say they accept queer people, but what they really accept is a version of us that stays tidy, grateful and non-disruptive.
Visibility without discomfort is not acceptance.
Queer Respectability is a terrible bargain.
You trim yourself down, behave properly, become easier to approve of.
And the people who wanted you smaller call that progress.
Queer people are not “everywhere” now.
We’re just finally visible enough that people who preferred us hidden have started counting.
… don’t worry, you can use your toes if you run out of fingers my dear!
Don’t like how queer people walk? Don’t follow us.
Don’t like how queer people love? Don’t date us.
Don’t like who queer people fuck? Then definitely don’t nosey through our windows.
You don’t have to understand queer lives. But you have to stop interfering with them.
