The Copyright Office just awarded "compilation" copyright to a novel written with ChatGPT. I went behind-the-scenes in what may be the new blueprint for AI-heavy works getting registered: wired.com/story/the-us-c…
This is notably different from a previous case I wrote about last year, where the USCO repeatedly rejected the claim outright: wired.com/story/ai-art-c…
want to clarify bc i can't edit the tweet: the USCO doesn't *award* copyright, it *registers* copyright claims. so not the best phrasing on my part!
@Knibbs Interesting move by the Copyright Office
@Knibbs Please note the Copyright Office doesn't award copyrights - they register them. The statute defines what things copyright attaches to (and doesn't). As a result, the Copyright Office Review Board doesn't refuse to copyright things - they discern whether rights have attached
@Knibbs so glad you are covering Elisa. She was one of the initial signatories to this open letter from artists using AI: creativecommons.org/2023/09/07/an-…
@Knibbs Well, this is disappointing, to say the least. 🫤
