Fortune investigated my concerns about ChatGPT accessing Apple Messages. They went directly to OpenAI, spoke with Lookout’s CTO, considered Proton’s analysis, and gave OpenAI’s explanation alongside mine. That’s exactly how I wanted this issue examined. My concern remains simple: one person can give ChatGPT access to private conversations involving people who never installed it, never consented and will never know it’s there. Nobody needs to defeat the encryption when software has access to readable messages at the endpoint. I told Fortune this is one of the most dangerous things I’ve seen in technology because the consequences extend far beyond the person who installs it. Lookout’s CTO independently called the risk "significant" and said giving third parties access means losing many of the benefits of end to end encryption. @ProtonPrivacy went further. When Proton published its own analysis of the integration, it cited my original research and Substack article and agreed with the core concern about what this does to end to end encrypted communications.
