One thing I’ve noticed is that LeBron fans go HARD after Kobe. I have them both in the same tier and could argue it either way, but the notion that LeBron is indisputably the better player is just not credible. There is a very real case for Kobe Bryant. Kobe won 5 championships with one franchise, across two completely different championship cores. And before someone says, “Shaq carried him to the first three,” let’s get something straight: Shaq was the best player on those teams. He deserved all three Finals MVPs. But Kobe wasn’t luggage. By the 2001 title run, Kobe averaged 29.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists through the Western Conference playoffs. He averaged 35.0 against Sacramento and 33.3 against San Antonio. Shaq dominated the interior. Kobe was already an elite two-way superstar destroying teams on the perimeter. Then Shaq left, and Kobe eventually answered the biggest question hanging over his legacy. Could he win without Shaq? Three straight Finals. Back-to-back championships. Two Finals MVPs. And then there is the basketball itself. Kobe had one of the most complete offensive arsenals the game has ever seen. Post game. Footwork. Midrange. Fadeaway. Three-point shooting. Isolation. Off-ball movement. Difficult-shot creation. Either direction. Almost anywhere on the floor. He also made 12 All-Defensive teams, including 9 First Team selections. LeBron absolutely has advantages. He is the superior passer, a more efficient scorer, an extraordinary physical force, and his longevity is almost impossible to match. His statistical résumé is staggering. But basketball greatness isn’t an Excel spreadsheet. Kobe won five championships. He repeated twice. He won as the younger superstar alongside another all-time great, then rebuilt his career and won again as the unquestioned centerpiece of a completely different championship team. You can pick LeBron. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to do so. But “LeBron and it’s not close”? No. Kobe Bryant has a case. A damn good one.
